Authentic Human Sexuality: An Integrated Christian Approach
by: Jack Balswick
Publisher: InterVarsity Press Published: 2000-01 ASIN: 0830815953

|
| | More details | | Sex pervades our culture, going far beyond the confines of the bedroom and spilling over into the workplace, the church and the media. Yet despite all the attention and even obsession devoted to sex, human sexuality remains confusing and even foreboding. What, after all, is authentic human sexuality? That is the question Judith and Jack Balswick set out to answer in this wide-ranging and probing book. Informed by sociology, psychology and theology, the Balswicks investigate how human sexuality originates both biologically and socially, lay groundwork for a normative Christian interpretation of sexuality, show how authentic sexuality is necessarily grounded in relationships, and explore such forms of "inauthentic sexuality" as sexual harassment, pornography and rape.Authentic Human Sexuality will prove an important work for ministers, psychologists, sociologists and students searching for an up-to-date and wise introduction to an essential--and endlessly fascinating and perplexing--facet of human identity. |

Being Consumed: Economics and Christian Desire
by: William T. Cavanaugh
Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company Published: 2008-03-17 ASIN: 0802845614
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | Are Christians for or against the free market? Should we not think of ourselves as consumers? Are we for or against globalization? How to we live in a world of scare resources? William Cavanaugh brings us a theological view and practice of everyday economic life with the use of Christian resources. He argues that we should not take the free market, consumer culture, globalization, and scarcity as givens, but change the terms of debate in each case. His consideration of the free market is not a question of for or against, but when exactly a market is truly free. He discusses consumption in light of the Eucharist, when God forms us to consume and be consumed rightly. He charges the church to know how to be both global and local, rather than one or the other. He reminds us that life in Christ is life abundant, not an existence of scarcity. Being Consumed examines pathologies of desire in contemporary free market economies, and displays a positive vision of how the dynamics of desire in Christ can both form and be formed by alternative economic practices. |

BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL (non illustrated)
by: Friedrich Nietzsche
Publisher: Published: 2010-11-30 ASIN: B004EEPOSQ
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to the Philosophy of the Future is basically a summary of Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophies and basic predictions for the future. First published in 1886, the book is made up of nearly three hundred statements ranging from one-line aphorisms to "rants" that are several pages in duration. In his book, Nietzsche denounces what he considers to be the meaningless moralities of nineteenth century scholars and thinkers. He criticizes his contemporaries for following Christianity and its morals without question. Essentially, Nietzsche has written Beyond Good and Evil as a critique of philosophy, religion, science, politics, and ethics. He feels that his contemporaries are proceeding in the wrong direction; he has no qualms about revealing their mistakes. Because of Nietzsche's attitudes and criticism toward his contemporaries, Beyond Good and Evil functions as a note to future thinkers, a warning per se about what is to come and what to avoid. However, it is apparent that Nietzsche had plenty of advice for his audience; quite possibly even too much. Though Nietzsche touched on important themes such as truth and morality, his somewhat manic and cyclic style, as well as the abundance of information that he included in his book transformed what was intended to be a manual for future thinkers into a chaotic diatribe in which too many ideas are presented. | | More details | | Ten years ago, in his best selling Ethics for a New Millennium, His Holiness the Dalai Lama first proposed an approach to ethics based on universal rather than religious principles. Now, in Beyond Religion, the Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way. Transcending the mere âreligion wars,â he outlines a system of ethics for our shared world, one that gives full respect to religion. With the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a stirring appeal for what he calls a âthird way,â a path to an ethical and happy life and to a global human community based on understanding and mutual respect. Beyond Religion is an essential statement from the Dalai Lama, a blueprint for all those who may choose not to identify with a religious tradition, yet still yearn for a life of spiritual fulfillment as they work for a better world. |

Bringing Sex into Focus: The Quest for Sexual Integrity
by: Caroline J. Simon
Publisher: IVP Academic Published: 2011-12-21 ASIN: 0830836373

|
| | More details | | In a culture that includes sex in everything from advertising to climbing the corporate ladder, it's easy to feel fuzzy about the true purpose and place of sexuality. In this book philosopher and ethicist Caroline J. Simon identifies six "lenses" through which people understand sex and sexuality: covenantal, procreative, expressive, romantic, power and "plain sex." Guided by a virtue ethic, she applies those lenses to a variety of sexual scenarios, from flirtation and desire to marital sexuality, helping us to see what filters we run issues of sexuality through and how, properly ordered and weighted, they can help us achieve sexual integrity. Here is a book for anyone interested in developing a holistic, biblical sexual ethic that brings into focus the bewildering array of cultural sexual presentations we're surrounded by every day. |

by: Wayne Grudem
Publisher: Crossway Books Published: 2003-11-06 ASIN: 1581345178

|
| | More details | Can business activity in itself be morally good and pleasing toGod? Sometimes business can seem so shady-manipulating the "bottomline," deceiving the consumer, or gaining promotions because ofwhom you know. But Wayne Grudem introduces a novel concept: business itselfglorifies God when it is conducted in a way that imitates God'scharacter and creation. He shows that all aspects of business, including ownership, profit, money, competition, and borrowing andlending, glorify God because they are reflective of God's nature.Though Grudem isn't naïve about the easy ways these activitiescan be perverted and used as a means to sin, he knows thatChristians can be about the business of business. This biblically based book is a thoughtful guide to imitatingGod during interactions with customers, coworkers, employees, andother businesses. See how your business, and your life in business, can be dedicated to God's glory. |

Christian Ethics: An Essential Guide (Abingdon Essential Guides)
by: Robin W Lovin
Publisher: Abingdon Press Published: 1999-12 ASIN: 0687054621
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | In this excellent outline of Christian ethics, Robin W. Lovin achieves a balance between the questions and issues which form the core of the study of ethics and the life situations from which those questions arise. Eschewing a sectarian approach which dismisses other understandings of the moral life, Lovin nonetheless lays claim to a specifically Christian understanding of ethics. He begins with basic Christian convictions about the reality of God and human redemption and weaves these convictions into the fabric of moral concerns that are widely shared in contemporary society. He takes note of the problems that arise when Christians try to act on or enforce their convictions in a pluralistic society and recognizes the variety of theological and moral beliefs that are held within the Christian community, as well as in the wider society. |

Escape From Reason: A Penetrating Analysis Of Trends In Modern Thought
by: Francis A. Schaeffer
Publisher: InterVarsity Press Published: 1977-01 ASIN: 0877845387
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | Man is dead. God is dead. Life has become meaningless existence, man a cog in a machine. The only way of escape lies in a nonrational fantasy world of experience, drugs, absurdity, pornography, an elusive "final experience," madness . . . .If this is the twentieth-century mentality, how did it come about? And how can the Christian faith be made meaningful today? In this highly original book Dr. Schaeffer traces the way in which art and philosophy have reflected the dualism in Western thinking introduced at the time of the Renaisance. Today this dualism is expressed in a despair of rationality and an escape into a nonrational world which alone offers hope. It is shown in literature, art and music, theatre and cinema, television and popular culture. |
