Tradition has it that Moses wrote the first five books of the Old Testament. In a very real sense, this is true, even though Moses may never have existed, even though the Exodus from Egypt may never have taken place, even though the Ten Commandments may never have been etched in stone by the Lord himself.

An ancient Native American myth tells of the old shaman who sat with tribal leaders before a smoking fire, sharing the pipe and imparting wisdom of the ages. Every night these leaders gathered in the same way, and each night the shaman began his tale with the following statement: “I do not know whether this really happened or not, but I know that it is True.”

And so it is with the stories in the Bible, in terms of its impact on humankind, the most important book ever written. The stories may or may not be historical, but certainly they are True.

Did Eve really talk with a serpent and convince Adam to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?

Did Cain kill Abel?

Did Noah and his sons build an ark?

Is Abraham the father of a chosen people?

Was Joseph sold into slavery by his envious brothers?

Did Aaron lose faith in the Lord and cause a golden calf to be constructed and worshipped?

As fascinating and challenging as these questions are, most human beings are content to go through life without ever investigating them seriously. Instead, we accept or reject them on the basis of what tradition tells us about them. Until 1450 and the introduction of movable type, only a few copies of the Bible existed. And, anyway, who could read? In modern times, with a bible on every home bookshelf, we don’t read the stories because it takes a lot more effort than watching sitcoms or talk shows or movies; we don’t read about Moses because it’s difficult to relate to a human being whose problems seem so different and remote from our own.

1-800-TheLord brings to life the people of Genesis and Exodus. Often humorous and satirical but always serious, the book tells the stories in a way that forces you to think even while you’re having a good time. It is a book that will send you to the Bible to read “the word of God” for yourself.

Bishop John Shelby Spong, in Chapter One of his book Resurrection: Myth or Reality, emphasizes the element of midrash in the Bible. “Midrash,” Bishop Spong writes, “is the Jewish way of saying that everything to be venerated in the present must somehow be connected with a sacred moment in the past. It is the ability to rework an ancient theme in a new context. It is the affirmation of a timeless truth found in the faith journey of a people so that this truth can be experienced afresh in every generation.”

And so, 1-800-The Lord follows this midrashic tradition. It retells the ancient stories in an attempt to help modern readers experience them in a new way. It emphasizes the Truth of the stories even as it de-emphasizes their historicity.

This story of the deluge which had found its way into Babylonia, where it was made to conform largely to the Akkadian dialect, fully betrays its origin; it came from the same source whence the Hebrew traditions came, namely from the people who lived in Amurru (Syria and Mesopotamia), called the Amorites. As was the case in pre-Mosaic days, and to a large extent in early Israel, when henotheism prevailed, "God" is the foremost deity. We learn from this tradition, and also from its redaction written centuries later, that a long famine preceded the deluge, which is not referred to in the Old Testament, that the famine had been sent because men had multiplied, and also because of their clamor, reminding us of the causes given for the deluge in the Old Testament. - Albert T. Clay (1922)

A Wall in Eden takes what is literally the world’s oldest story and makes it new. Those of faith, the “people of the book”, Christianity, Judaism and Islam, will find within it elements which will strengthen that faith. At the same time, they will find things which will challenge beliefs based on centuries of tradition, rather than the actual content of their respective holy books.
Both those of faith, and those of no particular faith, will find a compelling story, because aside from religions, theology and beliefs, our shared humanity makes the story of the Garden all our stories. Decisions forever made in the face of incomplete information, the search to find our place in an often mysterious world, and our relationship with God and fellow man are issues we all eventually must deal with, one way or the other. We are Adam and Eve.
As a wise person once said, “There is really only one story. It is merely told, over and over, in infinite variety.” A Wall in Eden takes the traditional, accepted story of Eden, and portrays it as a love story. Asked about that point, the author, Darrell McLaughlin responded with his own question, “It is any worse to take the story of Eden and portray it as a love story, than to take what really always has been, is and will be a love story and portray it as anything less than what it really is?”

This small book of biblical reading and short commentary is designed as an easy-to-use companion to the Bible, and to the daily "Awakenings" podcasts with Chuck Davis and EricKampmann. Both the book and the podcasts are formatted to help inspire a brief daily conversation built around passages from the Bible, focusing on how the biblical and the everyday intersect in sometimes unexpected ways. The "so what" and "now what" help bring the Bible to life in a tangible way.

Since self-publishing "Tree of Life" in 2003, Eric Kampmann has been on a mission to help others enjoy the power, wisdom, and beauty of the entire Bible. Coupled with the daily podcast with Pastor Chuck Davis, "Awakenings" is an excellent introduction to appreciating the Bible every day.

The princess took him as her own, And now as Moses he was known For from the Nile the princess drew The child whose life began anew. Everywhere in the Old Testament, the Fathers of the Church see Christ, the Theotokos, and the Church revealed. The Fathers always understood the Old Testament in light of the New. Moses in the basket is a type of baptism. Jacob crossed his hands to bless Joseph s younger son (Ephraim) over his older son (Manasseh) a prefiguring both of the Cross and of the surpassing of the Old Covenant by the New. The series begins with the life of Moses because the Passover (Pascha) of Moses and the Israelites at the Red Sea is the focal point of the Old Covenant and a key scripture associated with Christ s Pascha. The series will continue with several Moses stories and include others that are also associated with Christ s Pascha: Jonah and the fish, the Three Youths in the furnace, Elijah raising the widow s son. Using simple verse and colorful, semi-iconographic illustrations that are both sweet and reverent, the series aims to introduce children and their parents to the profound truths revealed in the pages of the Old Testament. Our hope is that the readers will develop a thirst to meet Christ in the Scriptures that so richly reveal Him.

The prophecies in the Book of Daniel are so detailed and accurate that scholars who don't believe in the Bible as the inspired Word of God have trouble accepting Daniel as the author of his book.

The Book of Daniel has been torn apart limb for limb by the discipline that calls itself “Higher
Criticism.” “Higher Criticism” objects particularly to the date of writing, trying to place it in the Maccabean period (±167 BC).

There is no reason for us to consider Daniel to be written during any other period than the
Babylonian Captivity, which lasted from ±597-538.

To find out the most compelling and best defense of the Book of Daniel against those who would attack it, download this book for your Kindle. Sir Robert Anderson has truly set the standard, and the reader will not be disappointed.

About the Author

Robert Anderson, though of Scottish descent, was born in Dublin on 29 May 1841. His father, Matthew Anderson, was Crown Solicitor in the Irish capital, a distinguished elder in the Irish Presbyterian Church, and was descended from one of the "No Surrender" group of Derry defenders. In the biographical sketch found in Kregel Publications recent reprints of his works it states that he described himself as an anglicized Irishman of Scottish extraction.

He had been brought up in a devout Christian home, and had led what is known as a religious life, with occasional transient fits of penitence and anxiety, but, in his late teens he had doubts about his own conversion. The Irish Evangelical Revival (1859-60) touched Robert's sister, who persuaded her brother to attend one of the services, held in Dublin by Rev Joseph Denham Smith, but the popular hymns disturbed him and he got very little out of the message. The light came the following Sunday evening when he attended a service in his own church and heard the Rev. John Hall (afterwards of New York), who "boldly proclaimed forgiveness of sins, and eternal life as God's gift in grace, unreserved and unconditional, to be received by us as we sat in the pews. His sermon thrilled me," Sir Robert said when describing the event, "and yet I deemed his doctrine to be unscriptural. So I waylaid him as he left the vestry, and on our homeward walk I tackled him about his heresies ... At last he let go my arm, and, facing me as we stood upon the pavement, he repeated with great solemnity his gospel message and appeal. 'I tell you,' he said, 'as a minister of Christ, and in His name, that there is life for you here and now if you will accept Him. Will you accept Christ, or will you reject Him?' After a pause — how prolonged I know not — I exclaimed, 'In God's name I will accept Christ.' Not another word passed between us; but after another pause he wrung my hand and left me. And I turned homewards with the peace of God filling my heart."

He was especially close to some of the greatest biblical teachers of his day, including James M. Gray, Cyrus Ingersoll Scofield, A. C. Dixon, and E. W. Bullinger. He also preached with John Nelson Darby (1800-1882) in the West of Ireland. Anderson was a member of the Plymouth Brethren, first with Darby then with the Open Brethren party before returing to his Presbyterian roots. R.A. was a copius author of numerous religious works, most of which are still in print to this day and enjoying an increasing circulation.

Daniel was a man both tested and exalted. Regardless of external circumstances, his commitment to the Lord God Almighty never fluctuated. He relied upon God for both life-saving miracles and the smallest of provisions. In this study through the intriguing book of Daniel, we will see this one man’s unwavering faith in his God, beginning from the time that he arrived in Babylon as a young captive and continuing throughout his years of service under the authority of several heathen kings and kingdoms. There is perhaps no better example of godly faith, dependency, trust, and worship than in the character of the prophet Daniel.

The story of the Old Testament holy man and prophet, Elijah written in novel form and told from the first person perspective of Obadiah, a minor player in the Biblical account who is given a larger role in this novel as a witness to the people and events of the story.
Obadiah is the narrator of this story and a secret follower of Elijah the prophet, whose mission from God is to lead the king and people of Israel back from the apostate worship of false gods, to the righteous worship of the One True God of all Creation. The insecurities and fears of King Ahab are greatly explored and detailed in this story, along with the trials and tribulations of Elijah, from the strongest moments of his great miracles to his weaknesses and fears of retaliation and persecution by Queen Jezebel. Elijah's story comes to represent both the strengths, weaknesses and ongoing struggles of modern day Christians and provides insight into their ongoing walk with God.
This novel is written in an appealing, semi King James sounding style which succeeds in carrying forth the pleasing majesty of the old King James Bible, but is lighter and easier to read and understand the old "King's English" style of writing.
Main characters:
Elijah:

The strange Holy Man and prophet from the eastern land of Tishbite who appears at the palace of the apostate King Ahab with a bold prophecy of impending disaster for the kingdom of Israel. A homeless vagabond in appearance dressed in poor animal skins, Elijah appears as a man that one would normally dismiss as unfit for human society, a man not right in his own mind, and at home only in the harsh wilderness from where he appeared. Elijah begins his mission by bringing King Ahab's land of Israel to it's knees with a prophecy of drought only to disappear into the night as strangely as he arrived. In the forthcoming years, Elijah remains uncaptured by the King's forces, reappears to challenge the false prophets of the king's wife, Queen Jezebel, to chastise and warn King Ahab of further prophetic judgments and establishes himself many times over as the true prophet of God, sent by divine mission to bring his king and countrymen back to the true worship of the true God.

King Ahab:
The apostate king of Israel, decadent and evil but ever doubtful and aware and worried of his distance from the true God of his chosen people. Ahab lives in a constant struggle between his love the things of the carnal world and his inner knowledge of the things God, vacillating weakly between the two, and forever drawn back to the carnality of the fallen world by his beautiful Queen Jezebel.

Queen Jezebel:
The beautiful foreign princess now married Ahab, the king of Israel. With the help of Serug, her mentor and high priest of the false god Baal, Jezebel is in a constant struggle to establish and expand the worship of Baal in the land of Israel. She leads the apostate King Ahab to persecute the people of God cruelly and bears special venom for Elijah, forever fearing in her heart that he may truly represent a god greater than Baal. Jezebel seeks Elijah's life and leads the great prophet into a time of doubt and cowardice and as his fears of her persecution become stronger than his faith in God.

Beerah:
The strong, arrogant and soldierly captain of the King Ahab's guard, responsible for the king's safety and never failing in his duties. Beerah is not a godly man but witnesses the power of God's many miracles worked through the holy man Elijah and becomes increasingly torn between the undeniable power of God over the carnal world of fallen men, and his duties toward the palace of the king.

Obadiah:
The head of Ahab's palace servants and narrator of this story. Obadiah is a godly man living amidst ungodly rulers, struggling against his fears of persecution, fearful and discreet about discovery of his fellowship with Elijah, and forever struggling with guilt over not being more forthcoming and honest about his disdain for Baal and worship of God.

Eve's Diary by Mark Twain is the poignant, funny, and what-if tongue-in-cheek classic satire of the first couple in the Garden of Eden: how they met; their adventures in the Garden; their love; and their perplexing Mars versus Venus moments. The story has animals (with drawings) and details Eve's experiments with fire and other concepts that are new to just-created humans. A short section gives Adam's take on his understanding of this lovely creature who both frustrates him and makes him head for the Fall. The book's text and images are from our own collection of rare books. The whimsical line drawings by Lester Ralph are enhanced with high black-and-white contrast for sharp and optimal viewing on your Kindle.

For many people, the Bible is an obsession, to be worshipped, quoted, and argued about endlessly. Furthermore, many extra-biblical books are very hard to find, and the English translations were often made by scholars several centuries ago, using impenetrably archaic language. Now all the hard work has been done for you in this easy to read summary. Now you can be a biblical expert - the easy way!
