|
| | More details | The eloquent teachings of Scott Hahn have moved thousands of Catholic Christians to a more vital expression of their faith. In A Father Who Keeps His Promises, the popular Catholic apologist explores the covenant love God reveals to us in the Scriptures, and explains how God patiently reaches out to us--despite our faults and shortcoming--to restore us into relationship with his divine Family. Join Hahn as he follows the high adventure of God's plan for the ages, beginning with Adam and Eve and continuing down through the generations to the coming of Christ and the birth of the Church. You'll discover how the patient love of the Father revealed in the Bible is the same persistent love he has for you.

A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant Society
by: Eugene H. Peterson
Publisher: IVP Books Published: 2000-06-30 ASIN: 0830822577
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | As a society, we are no less obsessed with the immediate than when Eugene Peterson first wrote this Christian classic. If anything, email and the Internet may have intensified our quest for the quick fix. But Peterson's time-tested prescription for discipleship remains the same--a long obedience in the same direction. Tucked away in the Hebrew Psalter, Peterson discovered "an old dog-eared songbook," the Songs of Ascents that were sung by pilgrims on their way up to worship in Jerusalem. In these songs (Psalms 120-134) Peterson finds encouragement for modern pilgrims as we learn to grow in worship, service, joy, work, happiness, humility, community and blessing. This 20th anniversary edition of A Long Obedience in the Same Direction features these Psalms in Peterson's widely acclaimed paraphrase, The Message. He also includes an epilogue in which he reflects on the themes of this book and his ministry during the twenty years since its original publication. |

A Pigeon and a Boy: A Novel
by: Meir Shalev
Publisher: Schocken Published: 2008-12-24 ASIN: B001ODEPIU
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | From the internationally acclaimed Israeli writer Meir Shalev comes a mesmerizing novel of two love stories, separated by half a century but connected by one enchanting act of devotion.
During the 1948 War of Independence--a time when pigeons are still used to deliver battlefield messages--a gifted young pigeon handler is mortally wounded. In the moments before his death, he dispatches one last pigeon. The bird is carrying his extraordinary gift to the girl he has loved since adolescence. Intertwined with this story is the contemporary tale of Yair Mendelsohn, who has his own legacy from the 1948 war. Yair is a tour guide specializing in bird-watching trips who, in middle age, falls in love again with a childhood girlfriend. His growing passion for her, along with a gift from his mother on her deathbed, becomes the key to a life he thought no longer possible.Â
Unforgettable in both its particulars and its sweep, A Pigeon and A Boy is a tale of lovers then and now--of how deeply we love, of what home is, and why we, like pigeons trained to fly in one direction only, must eventually return to it. In a voice that is at once playful, wise, and altogether beguiling, Meir Shalev tells a story as universal as war and as intimate as a winged declaration of love.

A Second Chance : the Book of Jonah
by: Richard H. Vollnogle
Publisher: Amazon Published: 2011-12-23 ASIN: B006PW0N6S
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | This book is about getting a second chance (or more). It may be considered to be relatively short being around 10k words in length. The introduction gives you some of the subjects that is dealt with in the book. Family relationships, spiritual relationships, socialization, cultural issues, what to do when you "screw up", and choices - how you deal with them. It is not meant to be an exhaustive treatise but a book that will make you think. We all "screw up" sometime in our lives and then what do we do. Jonah is a great book about showing what happens when we make choices and the consequences of our actions both positively and negatively. The book of Jonah is a favorite Old Testament chronicle to the young and old. I feel it is an underutilized book found in the Minor Prophets. Many just consider it just a "fish" story. Yet, God saw fit to reference it in His earthly ministry. The book deals with prophecy, the will of God, and how and why God himself is involved in our daily lives. God reveals himself to men and mankind by giving them a second or more chances.

A Time for Verse - Poetic Ponderings on Ecclesiastes
by: Barbara B Rollins
Publisher: Eagle Wings Press, imprint of Silver Boomer Books Published: 2009-11-30 ASIN: 098021209X
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | We quote Ecclesiastes - "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven," "there is no new thing under the sun," "cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days," "he hath made everything beautiful in his time." We quote it, but who reads Ecclesiastes? What does it say for us here, now? How can we reconcile the Twenty-first Century with a century ended before the counting began? Barbara B. Rollins, like The Teacher, looks back on decades of life. Her path traces the search for happiness and meaning through titles of teacher, Christian educator, secretary, lawyer, judge, writer, Sunday school teacher, Rotarian, Toastmaster, genealogist, historian, editor, and publisher. Her sons married, leaving parents at home surrounded by memories and dogs. Cosmic debates rampage through Barbara's mind, having led her to graduate degrees in Christian Education and in Law. A student of the history of Twelve-Step programs, she draws understanding from eclectic literature and from correspondents around the world. A Time for Verse juxtaposes immortality and trivia, meditation and irreverence, scripture and show tunes. A Time for Verse is what it is. |

An Introduction to the New Testament
by: D. A. Carson
Publisher: Zondervan Published: 2005-08-16 ASIN: 0310238595
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | An Introduction to the New Testament focuses on 'special introduction' that is historical questions dealing with authorship, date, sources, purpose, destination, and so forth. This approach stands in contrast to recent texts that concentrate more on literary form, rhetorical criticism, and historical parallels---topics the authors don't minimize, but instead think are better given extended treatment in exegesis courses. By refocusing on the essentials, An Introduction to the New Testament ensures that the New Testament books will be accurately understood within historical settings. For each New Testament document, the authors also provide a substantial summary of that book's content, discuss the book's theological contribution to the overall canon, and give an account of current studies on that book, including recent literary and social-science approaches to interpretation. This second edition reflects significant revision and expansion from the original, making this highly acclaimed text even more valuable. * A new chapter provides a historical survey examining Bible study method through the ages. * The chapter on Paul has been expanded to include an analysis of debates on the 'new perspective.' * The discussion of New Testament epistles has been expanded to form a new chapter. This new edition will help a new generation of students better grasp the message of the New Testament. |

Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament: Introducing the Conceptual World of the Hebrew Bible
by: John H. Walton
Publisher: Baker Academic Published: 2006-11-01 ASIN: 0801027500
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | Much of the Old Testament seems strange to contemporary readers. However, as we begin to understand how ancient people viewed the world, the Old Testament becomes more clearly a book that stands within its ancient context as it also speaks against it. John Walton provides here a thoughtful introduction to the conceptual world of the ancient Near East.
Walton surveys the literature of the ancient Near East and introduces the reader to a variety of beliefs about God, religion, and the world. In helpful sidebars, he provides examples of how such studies can bring insight to the interpretation of specific Old Testament passages. Students and pastors who want to deepen their understanding of the Old Testament will find this a helpful and instructive study. |

This book contains the following apocryphal books: The First Book of Esdras The Second Book of Esdras The Book of Tobit The Book of Judith The rest of the chapters of the Book of Esther The Book of the Wisdom of Solomon The Wisdom of Jesus the son of Sirach, or Ecclesiasticus The Book of Baruch Epistle of Jeremy The Song of the Three Children The History of Susanna Bel and the Dragon The Prayer of Manasses The First Book of the Maccabees The Second Book of the Maccabees
The word Apocrypha comes from a Greek word meaning "those having been hidden away".
Apocrypha generally means those sacred books of the Jewish people which were not included in the Hebrew canonized Bible.
These books are valuable as forming a link connecting the Old and New Testaments, and are regarded as useful reading, although not all the books are of equal value.
The apocryphal books in this Kindle book are considered of "special value" and are mostly correct, but with many interpolations by man.
The Roman Church regards as part of the canon the books of Tobit, Judith, Wisd., Ecclus., Baruch, 1 and 2 Macc., and the additions to Daniel and Esther. Besides these books, there are other Jewish apocryphal writings. The chief are the Psalms of Solomon, the Book of Enoch, the apocalypse of Baruch, the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, the Assumption of Moses, the Book of Jubilees, and the Sibylline Oracles |

Many complement parts of the Old Testament and readers will recognise some familiar Biblical characters in the narratives, such as Daniel and Esther. |

Bible Revisited: A Science Fiction Retelling of Genesis
by: Daylord Moon
Publisher: CreateSpace Published: 2010-12-14 ASIN: 1456419684
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | The book of Genesis in Bible has a fantastic story of the encounters between God and mankind, and a literal interpretation of that story runs counter to the current knowledge of physical sciences that mankind has. It leads to a natural question â âCan a version of the Genesis be created which is not at odds with the current scientific knowledge, yet remain reasonably close to the original narrative?â In this book, you will find a science-fiction version of Bible, one in which the different encounters that happen between God and mankind are narrated in a different manner. Once you read the version in this book, you will definitely wonder whether the fictional narrative in this book may indeed be closer to the truth than a literal interpretation of the holy book. From the story of creation to the struggle between Jacob and the angel, you will find a narration of Genesis which is completely plausible and consistent with the current scientific knowledge. You will find an explanation for creation within seven days, the obtaining of knowledge by eating the forbidden fruit, the creation of Eve from Adam, Noahâs escape from the flood, the disruption of the tower of Babel with the rise of multiple languages, and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah with Lotâs wife turning into a pillar of salt. These and various other events of Genesis are connected together in a novel that will make an interesting read for the science fiction enthusiast as well as a Biblical scholar. |

Chasing Daylight: Seize the Power of Every Moment
by: Erwin Raphael McManus
Publisher: Thomas Nelson Published: 2006-01-10 ASIN: 0785281134
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | In this inspiring book (formerly Seizing Your Divine Moment), Erwin McManus uses the biblical account of Israel's war with the Philistines (1 Samuel 13 and 14) and the characters of Saul and Jonathan to demonstrate the difference between living a life of purpose and adventure, and living one of apathy and missed opportunity. In the midst of a less-than-hopeful battle, Saul rested beneath a tree as Jonathan seized the divine moment that would impact the future of Israel. Through this story McManus artfully illustrates the eight characteristics of an adventurer's heart, what he calls "the Jonathan factor." Using powerful examples from his own life and ministry, along with fresh biblical teaching, McManus asserts that God crafts divine moments specific to each of us-priceless opportunities for us to actively engage in God's plan. By developing the characteristics McManus outlines, Christians can move from mundane to miraculous living. |

Did Adam and Eve Really Exist?: Who They Were and Why You Should Care
by: C. John Collins
Publisher: Crossway Books Published: 2011-05-04 ASIN: 1433524252
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | Throughout history, most Christians have believed that Adam and Eve were actual persons, of whom we are all descendants. Some Christians today, however, readily dismiss the historical consensus, arguing that those same Christians also believed the earth was the center of the universe. Understandably, there are reasons to doubt the traditional view . . . and yet rarely are those doubts humbly subjected to serious scholarship. C. John Collins invites both doubts and scholarship to the table. Applying well-informed, critical thinking to questions raised by theologians and scientists alike, Collins examines the historicity and relevance of a real Adam and Eve, ultimately answering the questions: Did Adam and Eve really exist? And why should we care? |
