A Time for Verse - Poetic Ponderings on Ecclesiastes
by: Barbara B. Rollins
Publisher: Eagle Wings Press imprint of Silver Boomer Books Published: 2011-12-29 ASIN: B006RMVP9K
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | We quote Ecclesiastes - "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven," "there is no new thing under the sun," "cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days," "he hath made everything beautiful in his time." We quote it, but who reads Ecclesiastes? What does it say for us here, now? How can we reconcile the Twenty-first Century with a century ended before the counting began? Barbara B. Rollins, like The Teacher, looks back on decades of life. Her path traces the search for happiness and meaning through titles of teacher, Christian educator, secretary, lawyer, judge, writer, Sunday school teacher, Rotarian, Toastmaster, genealogist, historian, editor, and publisher. Her sons married, leaving parents at home surrounded by memories and dogs. Cosmic debates rampage through Barbara's mind, having led her to graduate degrees in Christian Education and in Law. A student of the history of Twelve-Step programs, she draws understanding from eclectic literature and from correspondents around the world. A Time for Verse juxtaposes immortality and trivia, meditation and irreverence, scripture and show tunes. A Time for Verse is what it is. |

An Introduction to the New Testament
by: D. A. Carson
Publisher: Zondervan Published: 2005-08-16 ASIN: 0310238595
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | An Introduction to the New Testament focuses on 'special introduction' that is historical questions dealing with authorship, date, sources, purpose, destination, and so forth. This approach stands in contrast to recent texts that concentrate more on literary form, rhetorical criticism, and historical parallels---topics the authors don't minimize, but instead think are better given extended treatment in exegesis courses. By refocusing on the essentials, An Introduction to the New Testament ensures that the New Testament books will be accurately understood within historical settings. For each New Testament document, the authors also provide a substantial summary of that book's content, discuss the book's theological contribution to the overall canon, and give an account of current studies on that book, including recent literary and social-science approaches to interpretation. This second edition reflects significant revision and expansion from the original, making this highly acclaimed text even more valuable. * A new chapter provides a historical survey examining Bible study method through the ages. * The chapter on Paul has been expanded to include an analysis of debates on the 'new perspective.' * The discussion of New Testament epistles has been expanded to form a new chapter. This new edition will help a new generation of students better grasp the message of the New Testament. |

Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas
by: Elaine Pagels
Publisher: Vintage Published: 2004-05-04 ASIN: 0375703160

|
| | More details | In Beyond Belief, renowned religion scholar Elaine Pagels continues her groundbreaking examination of the earliest Christian texts, arguing for an ongoing assessment of faith and a questioning of religious orthodoxy.
Spurred on by personal tragedy and new scholarship from an international group of researchers, Pagels returns to her investigation of the âsecretâ Gospel of Thomas, and breathes new life into writings once thought heretical. As she arrives at an ever-deeper conviction in her own faith, Pagels reveals how faith allows for a diversity of interpretations, and that the ârogueâ voices of Christianity encourage and sustain âthe recognition of the light within us all.â |

Bible Studies in the Life of Paul Historical and Constructive (Annotated)
by: Henry T. Sell

|
| | More details | The book of Acts shows in a very graphic way the rapid growth and marvelous progress of Christianity in the midst of great opposition. We see in process of fulfillment the promise of Jesus Christ to his disciples that they should receive power after the Holy Ghost had come upon them and that they should be witnesses unto Him "both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth." Those were earnest times and full of stirring events, when men went forth to conquer a hostile world not with swords, but by the preaching of a gospel of peace and good will. As soon as this proclamation was made in Judea and Samaria a new instrument was chosen by Jesus Christ, in Paul, to carry His message to the uttermost part of the earth. He thus became at once the chief character in the larger work of planting and developing churches outside of Palestine. The study of Paul's life shows the difficulties encountered, the doctrines taught, and the organization perfected in the early churches. "We here watch the dawn of the gospel which the Savior preached as it broadens gradually into the boundless day."
Bible Studies in the Life of Paul is designed to follow the author's Bible Studies in the Life of Christ and to show the work of the Great Apostle in carrying the gospel to a Gentile world. The aim is to present the work of Paul in a constructive and historical way. While there has been a careful consideration, on the part of the author, of disputed questions, only conclusions upon which there is a general agreement amongst scholars, and which can be consistently held, are presented. The great main facts of Paul's life and work stand forth unchallenged and the emphasis is placed upon them. This book is divided into three parts, Paul's preparation for his work, his missionary journeys, and his writings. This is a text book, and, with the analysis of each study and questions, is prepared for the use of normal and advanced Sunday-school classes, teachers' meetings, schools, colleges, and private study. This is the sixth book of the kind which the author has prepared and sent forth. The large favor with which the other books have been received, and the desire, first of all, of making the life and work of Paul even better known, have been the motives which have led to its preparation.

Chapter 1, Verse 1
by: Tom Allen
Publisher: Tom Allen (DBA) Alabaster Publishing Published: 2010-07-28 ASIN: B003XRE5Y4

|
| | More details | Some of us wait to see Jesus Christ literally âcoming in the clouds.â Others see the promise of his return fulfilled in his âcloudâ of witnesses.
âChapter 1, Verse 1â² explores the manifestation of Christ within us by providing a verse by verse explanation of the symbolism found in the Book of Revelation. It explains how and why the book reveals expressions of Christ within us as we experience the mystery of God. Here is the âreturnâ of Jesus Christ, the one who said, ââ¦I am with you always.â Christ is revealed in us, to us and through us.
Excerpt from 'Chapter 1, Verse 1': The scroll or âlittle bookâ found in the right hand of the Lamb of God has writing on both the front and back. Interestingly, the paper of ancient times used papyrus reeds cut into strips and placed horizontally to dry. Once dry, more papyrus strips were laid at right angles and glued in place. Finally, after polishing, the paper was ready to use. Writing was done with the grain. When writing on both sides of the paper, as with the scroll, the writing on one side would be written at a ninety degree angle when compared to the opposite side, due to the grain of the paper. Whoever reads the scroll would have to, at times, turn it ninety degrees to understand it.
The writing on both the front and back of the scroll is similar to the way information about the revealing of Christ is given to us in the Book of Revelation. We have to look at Revelation from a different angle, a different perspective, if we are to understand its meaning. The Book of Revelation is like a stereo-gram picture, a picture hidden within a picture. On the surface it paints an image of war, famine, death, and destruction. But when we change our focus, we will see the hidden picture, one of Christ manifested within his people. |

Christ, The Way, The Truth, and The Life

|
| | More details | | "CHRISTIAN READER,-After the foregoing address, I need not put thee to much more trouble: only I shall say, that he must needs be a great stranger in our Israel, or sadly smitten with that epidemic plague of indifferency, which hath infected many of this generation, to a benumbing of them, and rendering them insensible and unconcerned in the matters of God, and of their own souls, and sunk deep in the gulf of dreadful inconsideration, who seeth not, or taketh no notice of, nor is troubled at the manifest and terrible appearances of the inexpressibly great hazard, our all, as Christians in this life, is this day exposed into. I mean the mystery of the gospel of the grace of God, wherein the exceeding riches of his grace, in his kindness towards us, through Christ Jesus, hath been shown. We have enjoyed for a considerable time, a clear and powerful dispensation hereof, in great purity and plenty; but, alas! is it not manifest to all, that will not willfully shut their eyes, that this mercy and goodness of God hath been wickedly abused, and the pure administration of his grace and love perfidiously sinned away, by this apostate generation. " John Brown was an American abolitionist, who advocated and practiced armed insurrection as a means to end all slavery. He led the Pottawatomie Massacre in 1856 in Bleeding Kansas and made his name in the unsuccessful raid at Harpers Ferry in 1859. President Abraham Lincoln said he was a "misguided fanatic" and Brown has been called "the most controversial of all 19th-century Americans." Brown's actions are often referred to as "patriotic treason", depicting both sides of the argument. |

| | More details | | "In Jesus, we have both pardon and healing; they are two sides of His redemptive work." The health of our bodies is a part of the salvation Jesus earned for us on Calvary. He took upon Himself both our souls and our bodies, delivering both in equal measure from the consequences of sin. In the ministering of the apostles, forgiveness and healing complemented each other, allowing the Spirit of God to flow freely. Why isn't the modern Church experiencing this surge of God's healing power? What does He promise us regarding divine healing? In âDivine Healing,â Andrew Murray answers these questions scripturally, showing how to walk victoriously in divine health. |

From the author: "It is often made a charge against professing Christians that their religion has very little to do with common morality. The taunt has sharpened multitudes of gibes and been echoed in all sorts of tones: it is very often too true and perfectly just, but if ever it is, let it be distinctly understood that it is not so because of Christian men's religion but in spite of it. Their bitterest enemy does not condemn them half so emphatically as their own religion does: the sharpest censure of others is not so sharp as the rebukes of the New Testament. If there is one thing which it insists upon more than another, it is that religion without morality is nothingâthat the one test to which, after all, every man must submit is, what sort of char- acter has he and how has he behavedâis he pure or foul? All high-flown pretension, all fervid emotion has at last to face the question which little children ask, 'Was he a good man?'" |

Forged: Writing in the Name of God--Why the Bible's Authors Are Not Who We Think They Are
by: Bart D. Ehrman
Publisher: HarperOne Published: 2011-03-22 ASIN: B006QS02F8

|
| | More details | It is often said, even by critical scholars who should know better, that âwriting in the name of anotherâ was widely accepted in antiquity. But New York Times bestselling author Bart D. Ehrman dares to call it what it was: literary forgery, a practice that was as scandalous then as it is today. In Forged, Ehrmanâs fresh and original research takes readers back to the ancient world, where forgeries were used as weapons by unknown authors to fend off attacks to their faith and establish their church. So, if many of the books in the Bible were not in fact written by Jesusâs inner circleâbut by writers living decades later, with differing agendas in rival communitiesâwhat does that do to the authority of Scripture? Ehrman investigates ancient sources to: - Reveal which New Testament books were outright forgeries.
- Explain how widely forgery was practiced by early Christian writersâand how strongly it was condemned in the ancient world as fraudulent and illicit.
- Expose the deception in the history of the Christian religion.
Ehrmanâs fascinating story of fraud and deceit is essential reading for anyone interested in the truth about the Bible and the dubious origins of Christianityâs sacred texts. |

Gospel of Mark, The (Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture)
by: Mary Healy
Publisher: Baker Academic Published: 2008-11-01 ASIN: 0801035864

|
| | More details | | There is an increasing hunger among Catholics to study the Bible in depth and in a way that integrates Scripture with Catholic doctrine, worship, and daily life. In October 2008, a meeting of the world Synod of Bishops scheduled by Pope Benedict XVI will focus on "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church." Coinciding with that meeting is the launch of the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture (CCSS), a series that responds to the desire of Catholics to access the living Word of God. The Gospel of Mark is the first of seventeen volumes, which will cover the entire New Testament. Written by trusted Catholic biblical scholars, these commentaries interpret Scripture in the light of Catholic tradition. Accessibly written yet substantive, the CCSS fills a gap in the available literature by offering commentaries that cover more than brief study guides but are less daunting than scholarly commentaries. |

| | More details | The Order of the Books In the English Bible the books of the Old Testament are arranged, not in the order in which they appear in the Hebrew Bible, but in that assigned to them by the Greek translation. In this translation the various books are grouped according to their contents-first the historical books, then the poetic, and lastly the prophetic. This order has its advantages, but it obscures many important facts of which the Hebrew order preserves a reminiscence. The Hebrew Bible has also three divisions, known respectively as the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings. The Law stands for the Pentateuch. The Prophets are subdivided into (i) the former prophets, that is, the historical books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings, regarded as four in number; and (ii) the latter prophets, that is, the prophets proper-Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Twelve (i.e. the Minor Prophets). The Writings designate all the rest of the books, usually in the following order-Psalms, Proverbs, Job, S

See how one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple with Beth Moore's study James: Mercy Triumphs. Once you get to know both the man and the Book of James, you'll never be the same again. Bible scholars compare James to the prophet Amos. In other ways, James more closely resembles the Book of Proverbs than any New Testament book. James is a book with many topics -- social justice, joy, hardship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility, and prayer -- all of which are covered in this study. Jesus of Nazareth Part Two, Holy Week: From the Entrance Into Jerusalem To The Resurrection
by: Pope Benedict XVI
Publisher: Ignatius Press Published: 2011-03-10 ASIN: B004GUSIWC

|
| | More details | | For Christians, Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God, who died for the sins of the world, and who rose from the dead in triumph over sin and death. For non-Christians, he is almost anything else-myth, a political revolutionary, a prophet whose teaching was misunderstood or distorted by his followers. Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God, and no myth, revolutionary, or misunderstood prophet, insists Benedict XVI. He thinks that the best of historical scholarship, while it can't "prove" Jesus is the Son of God, certainly doesn't disprove it. Indeed, Benedict maintains that the evidence, fairly considered, brings us face-to-face with the challenge of Jesus-a real man who taught and acted in ways that were tantamount to claims of divine authority, claims not easily dismissed as lunacy or deception. Benedict XVI presents this challenge in his new book, Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week: From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection, the sequel volume to Jesus of Nazareth: From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration. Why was Jesus rejected by the religious leaders of his day? Who was responsible for his death? Did he establish a Church to carry on his work? How did Jesus view his suffering and death? How should we? And, most importantly, did Jesus really rise from the dead and what does his resurrection mean? The story of Jesus raises these and other crucial questions. Benedict brings to his study the vast learning of a brilliant scholar, the passionate searching of a great mind, and the deep compassion of a pastor's heart. In the end, he dares readers to grapple with the meaning of Jesus' life, teaching, death, and resurrection. Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week: From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection challenges both believers and unbelievers to decide who Jesus of Nazareth is and what he means for them. |

A Study of the Messiah and His Mission according to Holy Scriptures both Ancient and Modern by James E. Talmage One of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 1922
The scope of the subject presented in this work is expressed on the title page. It will be readily seen that the author has departed from the course usually followed by writers on the Life of Jesus Christ, which course, as a rule, begins with the birth of Mary's Babe and ends with the ascension of the slain and risen Lord from Olivet. The treatment embodied in these pages, in addition to the narrative of the Lord's life in the flesh comprizes the antemortal existence and activities of the world's Redeemer, the revelations and personal manifestations of the glorified and exalted Son of God during the apostolic period of old and in modern times, the assured nearness of the Lord's second advent, and predicted events beyondâall so far as the Holy Scriptures make plain. |

| | More details | | Beginning with Jesus' birth, Ken Bailey leads you on a kaleidoscopic study of Jesus throughout the four Gospels. Bailey examines the life and ministry of Jesus with attention to the Lord's Prayer, the Beatitudes, Jesus' relationship to women, and especially Jesus' parables. Through it all, Bailey employs his trademark expertise as a master of Middle Eastern culture to lead you into a deeper understanding of the person and significance of Jesus within his own cultural context. With a sure but gentle hand, Bailey lifts away the obscuring layers of modern Western interpretation to reveal Jesus in the light of his actual historical and cultural setting. This entirely new material from the pen of Ken Bailey is a must-have for any student of the New Testament. If you have benefited from Bailey's work over the years, this book will be a welcome and indispensable addition to your library. If you are unfamiliar with Bailey's work, this book will introduce you to a very old yet entirely new way of understanding Jesus. |
