40 Treasured Bible Verses: A Devotional

|
| | More details | John 1:14 The Word became flesh . . . full of grace and truth. The Gospel of John begins like the first notes of some grand symphony, or perhaps the first brushstrokes of a masterpiece on canvas, or the first words whispered to you when you were cradled in your mother's arms. "In the beginning was the Word. . . . And the Word became flesh . . . full of grace and truth." Who was Jesus? Was he born to Mary in Bethlehem? Had he always been? John 1 unlocks a mystery. The Word always was God. Somehow, the fellowship that is God, the intimate relationships of love that are God's heart, have always been, and will always be. --from chapter 1. This wonderful devotional book will stimulate both mind and heart. Howell provides contexts for the selected verses and draws from a wide range of sources to illuminate their meaning for Christian faith and life today. His insights are richly rewarding. He encourages, inspires, and motivates us to understand the biblical verses in relation to faithful Christian discipleship. Howell's pastoral sensitivities combined with his studies and seasoned wisdom make this book an outstanding companion to Scripture reading and a gift to all Bible readers. |

A Time for Verse - Poetic Ponderings on Ecclesiastes
by: Barbara B. Rollins
Publisher: Eagle Wings Press imprint of Silver Boomer Books Published: 2011-12-29 ASIN: B006RMVP9K
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | We quote Ecclesiastes - "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven," "there is no new thing under the sun," "cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days," "he hath made everything beautiful in his time." We quote it, but who reads Ecclesiastes? What does it say for us here, now? How can we reconcile the Twenty-first Century with a century ended before the counting began? Barbara B. Rollins, like The Teacher, looks back on decades of life. Her path traces the search for happiness and meaning through titles of teacher, Christian educator, secretary, lawyer, judge, writer, Sunday school teacher, Rotarian, Toastmaster, genealogist, historian, editor, and publisher. Her sons married, leaving parents at home surrounded by memories and dogs. Cosmic debates rampage through Barbara's mind, having led her to graduate degrees in Christian Education and in Law. A student of the history of Twelve-Step programs, she draws understanding from eclectic literature and from correspondents around the world. A Time for Verse juxtaposes immortality and trivia, meditation and irreverence, scripture and show tunes. A Time for Verse is what it is. |

A Word for the Day: Key Words from the New Testament
by: J. D. Watson
Publisher: AMG Publishers Published: 2006-09-12 ASIN: 0899576869
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | Learn a Biblical Greek WORD Everyday. The purpose of a Word of the Day is to share the richness of the Greek language used in the New Testament and help make these words practical in the reader's Christian living. Because words do matter, the words of the New Testament matter most. And in a day when words don't seem to mean much, the need for precision in Christian doctrine and practice has never been more critical. For each day of the year, Watson presents a brief word study and then offers an application to make that particular Greek word become real for practical living. To aid reinforcement, related verses are listed for the reader's personal study. Doc Watson fulfills his desire of many years to provide daily devotionals that not only contain deep spiritual truth, but also are easy to read and understand. In this day of relativism, the absolutes of God's Word (and words) are desperately needed. These brief devotionals will enrich the mind, stir the soul, and empower the life of God's people. |

An Exposition of The Sermon on The Mount
by: A.W. Pink
Publisher: Published: 2011-06-28 ASIN: B0058OITRO
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | Though we are told at the beginning of chapter v that it was His "disciples" whom Christ here taught, yet it is equally clear from the closing verses of chapter vii that this Sermon was spoken in the hearing of the multitudes. This must be steadily borne in mind throughout, for while it contains much instruction for believers in connection with their living a good, honest, and blessed life, yet not a little in it is evidently designed for unbelievers, particularly those sections which contain a most searching setting forth of the spiritual nature of His kingdom and the character of those who enter and enjoy its privileges. Romish teachers have greatly erred, for they insist that Christ here propounded a new Lawâfar more perfect than the Law of Mosesâand that He delivered now entirely new counsel to His disciples, which was never given in the Law or the Prophets; whereas His intention was to clear the true meaning of the Law and the Prophets, which had been greatly corrupted by the Jewish doctors. But we will not further anticipate what we shall (D. V.) contemplate more fully in the studies to follow.

| | More details | | What distinguishes" the perspective on Paul" and what lies beyond it? What are scholars saying about Paul and the Roman Empire or about the intersection between feminist and postcolonial interpretation of Paul? Magnus Zetterholm provides a clear and reliable guide to these and other lively issues in the contemporary study of Paul, surveying the history of the principal perspectives on Paul's relation to Judaism and the Jewish law and showing the relationships between answers given to those questions and the assumptions scholars bring to other issues as well. This is an indispensable handbook for the beginning student of the apostle and his thought. |

|
| | More details | | Biography John Flavel - (1627-1691), Puritan theologian Flavel was born at Bromsgrove in Wordesterchire. He was the elder son of Richard Flavel, described in contemporary records as "a painful and eminent minister." After receiving his early education, partly at home and partly at the grammar-schools of Bromsgrove and Haslar, he entered University College, Oxford. Soon after taking orders in 1650 he obtained a curacy at Diptford, Devon, and on the death of the vicar he was appointed to succeed him. From Diptford he removed in 1656 to Dartmouth. He was ejected from his living by the passing of the Act of Uniformity in 1662, but continued to preach and administer the sacraments privately till the Five Mile Act of 1665, when he retired to Slapton, 5 miles away. He then lived for a time in London, but returned to Dartmouth, where he labored till his death in 1691. He was married four times. He was a vigorous and voluminous writer, and not without a play of fine fancy. His principal works are his Navigation Spiritualized (1671); The Fountain of Life, in forty-two Sermons (1672); The Method of Grace (1680); Pneumatologia, a Treatise on the Soul of Man (1698); A Token for Mourners; Husbandry Spiritualized (1699). |

Chrysostom: Homilies on Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Thessalonians, Timothy, Titus, and Philemon

|
| | More details | ohn Chrysostom (c. 347â407, Greek: ἸÏÎ¬Î½Î½Î·Ï á½ Î§ÏÏ
ÏÏÏÏομοÏ), Archbishop of Constantinople, was an important Early Church Father. He is known for his eloquence in preaching and public speaking, his denunciation of abuse of authority by both ecclesiastical and political leaders, the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, and his ascetic sensibilities. After his death (or, according to some sources, during his life) he was given the Greek surname chrysostomos, meaning "golden mouthed", rendered in English as Chrysostom.[1][2] The Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches honor him as a saint and count him among the Three Holy Hierarchs, together with Saints Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzus. He is recognized by the Eastern Orthodox Church and Roman Catholic Church as a saint and Doctor of the Church. Churches of the Western tradition, including the Roman Catholic Church, some Anglican provinces, and parts of the Lutheran Church, commemorate him on 13 September. Some Lutheran and many Anglican provinces commemorate him on the traditional Eastern feast day of 27 January. The Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria recognizes John Chrysostom as a saint (feast days: 16 Thout and 17 Hathor).[3] John is known in Christianity chiefly as a preacher, theologian and liturgist, particularly in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Among his sermons, eight directed against Judaizing Christians remain controversial for their impact on the development of Christian antisemitism.[4][5][6]. He was also active in destruction of pagan symbols and places of worship, including the temple of Artemis at Ephesus. |

Commentary of The Gospel of St John
by: St Thomas Aquinas
Publisher: Published: 2010-04-15 ASIN: B003HKRBYI
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | St. Thomasâ commentary on the Gospel of St. John is unique among his many writings on Sacred Scripture. It is the work of a master theologian, delivered at the University of Paris, then the intellectual center in Christendom, when Thomas was at the height of his fame and apostolic zeal for souls. A fourteenth-century list of Thomasâ writings notes that this commentary is a reportatio by Reginald of Piperno and adds âbetter than which none can be found.â Areportatio is a verbal report of an actual lecture taken down by a scribe or student in the course of actual delivery. In this case the scribe was the faithful Friar Reginald of Piperno, who had been the âconstant companion,â or socius, for the last fifteen years of Thomasâ short but busy life. The Italian Province of Dominicans wisely provided Thomas with this kind of personal secretary and general factotum after he returned from Paris as a Master in Sacred Theology in 1260. A reportatio is not exactly a dictation in our sense of the term; it is more like a studentâs notebook in shorthand containing basically the gist of what is being said, but usually with varying numbers of verbal omissions and inaccuracies. But this commentary is more than a mere scribal report. It was in fact âcorrectedâ by Thomas himselfâif we are to believe Tolomeo of Lucca, one of Thomasâ early biographers and confreresâbefore the commentary went into circulation through copies made by hand, the customary mode of publication before the era of the printing press. More than that: according to Bernard Gui, another confrere and early biographer, Thomas himself wrote out in full the commentary on the first five chapters of John (and hence this section ought to be considered an authentic expositio, or authoritative version), while the rest of it survived in the hand of Reginald, corrected by Thomas. This commentary was very popular in the Middle Ages, and it ranks among the best of Thomasâ work as a master theologian and saintly man of faith. It was read not only by theologians searching for the truth, but also by preachers and pious men and women desiring solid food for meditation and fervent prayer. Scattered throughout the world there still exist thirty-three complete and thirteen incomplete manuscript copies of this work, attesting to its considerable popularity before the age of printing. Innumerable copies of this work have no doubt been lost or destroyed in the tumult of centuries following the Middle Ages. This detailed commentary is St. Thomasâ personal response to the Word of God Incarnate as described in the sublime words of John âthe Divine.â For St. Thomas, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob spoke to his chosen people through the mouth of prophets in the long course of salvation history, âBut when the appointed time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born a subject of the Law, to redeem the subjects of the Law and to enable us to be adopted as sonsâ (Gal 4:4-5). This Incarnate Son, Jesus Christ, is the total manifestation of the Father, the Eternal Word made flesh. There is nothing left unsaid in the Word; the Fatherâs love is complete in the love the Son bears for the Father and for us. Christâs whole life, his passion, death, and resurrection, are the praise and glory of the Father âthrough the working of the Holy Spirit.â âYou must believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in meâ (Jn 14:11). âWhatever you ask for in my name I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Sonâ (Jn 14:13). Christâs âfoodâ was to do the will of his Father in all things, thus glorifying the Father in Jesus. |

Compassion as a Subversive Activity: Illness, Community, and the Gospel of Mark
by: David Urion
Publisher: Cowley Publications Published: 2006-10-25 ASIN: 1561012793
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | To Dr. David Urionâs question, âHow can I help you?â the father of the young boy with autism responded in a small voice that choked back some tears, âBe with us. Keep us company. This is so lonely.â This book is part of Dr. Urionâs attempt to keep his promise, a promise which in fact we all made to this family and to many families on the day of their childâs baptism. Baptism by baptism, in each of our faith communities, we vow to do everything in our power to support them in their life in God. Urion beckons us to contemplate the miraculous healings in the Gospel of Mark as subversive political acts of power that provide examples of restoring the integrity and the wholeness of the community, not just for the persons who are overtly healed but for the community as well. The tales of power he invites us to consider in this book reflect upon the extraordinary and paradoxical power of the powerless. |

Divine Healing (Andrew Murray Christian Classics)
by: Andrew Murray
Publisher: Diggory Press (www.diggorypress.com) Published: 2008-03-25 ASIN: B0016JL3UA

|
| | More details | | "In Jesus, we have both pardon and healing; they are two sides of His redemptive work." The health of our bodies is a part of the salvation Jesus earned for us on Calvary. He took upon Himself both our souls and our bodies, delivering both in equal measure from the consequences of sin. In the ministering of the apostles, forgiveness and healing complemented each other, allowing the Spirit of God to flow freely. Why isn't the modern Church experiencing this surge of God's healing power? What does He promise us regarding divine healing? In âDivine Healing,â Andrew Murray answers these questions scripturally, showing how to walk victoriously in divine health. |

Alexander MacLaren - 1826-1910), Baptist preacher and expositor, was born in Glasgow on February 11, 1826, and died in Manchester on May 5, 1910. He had been for almost sixty-five years a minister, entirely devoted to his calling. He lived more than almost any of the great preachers of his time between his study, his pulpit, his pen.
He subdued action to thought, thought to utterance and utterance to the Gospel. His life was his ministry; his ministry was his life. In 1842 he was enrolled as a candidate for the Baptist ministry at Stepney College, London. He was tall, shy, silent and looked no older than his sixteen years. But his vocation, as he himself (a consistent Calvinist) might have said, was divinely decreed. "I cannot ever recall any hesitation as to being a minister," he said. "It just had to be."
In the College he was thoroughly grounded in Greek and Hebrew. He was taught to study the Bible in the original and so the foundation was laid for his distinctive work as an expositor and for the biblical content of his preaching. Before Maclaren had finished his course of study he was invited to Portland Chapel in Southampton for three months; those three months became twelve years. He began his ministry there on June 28, 1846. His name and fame grew.
His ministry fell into a quiet routine for which he was always grateful: two sermons on Sunday, a Monday prayer meeting and a Thursday service and lecture. His parishioners thought his sermons to them were the best he ever preached. In April 1858 he was called to be minister at Union Chapel in Manchester. No ministry could have been happier. The church prospered and a new building had to be erected to seat 1,500; every sitting was taken. His renown as preacher spread throughout the English-speaking world. His pulpit became his throne. He was twice elected President of the Baptist Union. He resigned as pastor in 1905 after a ministry of forty-five years.
MacLaren's religious life was hid with Christ in God. He walked with God day by day. He loved Jesus Christ with a reverent, holy love and lived to make Him known. In his farewell sermon at Union he said: "To efface oneself is one of a preacher's first duties." |

Faith That Works: Reflections on the Book of James (Good News and Grins To Go)

|
| | More details | I don't know about you but I'm always looking for something to use as a guide for my daily "Quiet Time". Most of the material out there is either too technical or too syrupy. When I look for stuff to read for this daily time of prayer and meditation, I'm generally not looking for something I'll need to pull out a dictionary to understand. Nor am I looking for something that requires that I keep tissues handy. I'm looking for a quick read that offers some insight on a short snippet of scripture from a perspective that might be different from mine or at least not something I'd think of myself. Oh yeah, it would be nice if it left me with a smile on my face most mornings. With these parameters, my search has generally been fruitless. So, being the industrious "type A" person that I am, I wrote one myself. I don't promise that this little walk through the book of James will leave you breathless from its theological significance. It will not make you misty eyed and drive you to hug everyone you meet that day. What I do hope is that it makes you think about the wisdom of James and do it with a smile on your face. I think the smile part is important because we have enough things in our day that make us frown. I think our day should start (or end depending on when you have your "quiet time") with prayer, God's word, some reflective thought, and a smile. I designed my devotional series, "Good News and Grins To Go" specifically for Kindle Apps that run on mobile phones and other mobile devices to help folks take an easy to read devotional wherever they go. Stuck in line, waiting for someone running late for an appointment, stuck in traffic? Just pull out Good News and Grins To Go and take advantage of a bad situation. (Please don't read and drive, or drive while praying with your eyes closed!) So enjoy this guide and enjoy your time with God. I think He likes it best that way! Pressing on toward the goal . . .
