An Introduction to the New Testament
by: D. A. Carson
Publisher: Zondervan Published: 2005-08-16 ASIN: 0310238595
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | An Introduction to the New Testament focuses on 'special introduction' that is historical questions dealing with authorship, date, sources, purpose, destination, and so forth. This approach stands in contrast to recent texts that concentrate more on literary form, rhetorical criticism, and historical parallels---topics the authors don't minimize, but instead think are better given extended treatment in exegesis courses. By refocusing on the essentials, An Introduction to the New Testament ensures that the New Testament books will be accurately understood within historical settings. For each New Testament document, the authors also provide a substantial summary of that book's content, discuss the book's theological contribution to the overall canon, and give an account of current studies on that book, including recent literary and social-science approaches to interpretation. This second edition reflects significant revision and expansion from the original, making this highly acclaimed text even more valuable. * A new chapter provides a historical survey examining Bible study method through the ages. * The chapter on Paul has been expanded to include an analysis of debates on the 'new perspective.' * The discussion of New Testament epistles has been expanded to form a new chapter. This new edition will help a new generation of students better grasp the message of the New Testament. |

| | More details | In Beyond Belief, renowned religion scholar Elaine Pagels continues her groundbreaking examination of the earliest Christian texts, arguing for an ongoing assessment of faith and a questioning of religious orthodoxy.
Spurred on by personal tragedy and new scholarship from an international group of researchers, Pagels returns to her investigation of the “secret” Gospel of Thomas, and breathes new life into writings once thought heretical. As she arrives at an ever-deeper conviction in her own faith, Pagels reveals how faith allows for a diversity of interpretations, and that the “rogue” voices of Christianity encourage and sustain “the recognition of the light within us all.” |

Biblical Nonsense: A Review of the Bible for Doubting Christians
by: Jason Long
Publisher: iUniverse, Inc. Published: 2005-01-19 ASIN: 0595341829
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | The Bible is not the word of God. Biblical Nonsense is a broad look at the tremendous problem of associating divinity with the world’s most popular book. This part-philosophical, part-scientific overview explores the Bible’s divine treachery, scientific mistakes, historical errors, false prophecies, and comical absurdities. Biblical Nonsense also expands beyond these standard reasons for skepticism by tackling the rationale behind the emergence and perpetuation of Christianity, psychological and sociocultural reasons that drive Christians to cling to their beliefs, and illogical methods of argumentation invoked in the defense of the Bible. Author Dr. Jason Long is a former Christian who condenses the most significant biblical problems into this single volume. Unlike other books in the field that delve into only one topic, this manuscript, comprehensible even to those who have never opened a Bible, is a full-fledged attempt to demonstrate that God’s supposed word is a product of human minds, not divine inspiration. Dr. Long’s fresh experiences in the church and advanced levels of educational enlightenment make him the perfect individual to present this vehemently unpopular, yet undeniably appealing topic. |

Chapter 1, Verse 1
by: Tom Allen
Publisher: Tom Allen (DBA) Alabaster Publishing Published: 2010-07-28 ASIN: B003XRE5Y4

|
| | More details | Some of us wait to see Jesus Christ literally â€coming in the clouds.’ Others see the promise of his return fulfilled in his â€cloud’ of witnesses.
â€Chapter 1, Verse 1′ explores the manifestation of Christ within us by providing a verse by verse explanation of the symbolism found in the Book of Revelation. It explains how and why the book reveals expressions of Christ within us as we experience the mystery of God. Here is the â€return’ of Jesus Christ, the one who said, “…I am with you always.” Christ is revealed in us, to us and through us.
Excerpt from 'Chapter 1, Verse 1': The scroll or â€little book’ found in the right hand of the Lamb of God has writing on both the front and back. Interestingly, the paper of ancient times used papyrus reeds cut into strips and placed horizontally to dry. Once dry, more papyrus strips were laid at right angles and glued in place. Finally, after polishing, the paper was ready to use. Writing was done with the grain. When writing on both sides of the paper, as with the scroll, the writing on one side would be written at a ninety degree angle when compared to the opposite side, due to the grain of the paper. Whoever reads the scroll would have to, at times, turn it ninety degrees to understand it.
The writing on both the front and back of the scroll is similar to the way information about the revealing of Christ is given to us in the Book of Revelation. We have to look at Revelation from a different angle, a different perspective, if we are to understand its meaning. The Book of Revelation is like a stereo-gram picture, a picture hidden within a picture. On the surface it paints an image of war, famine, death, and destruction. But when we change our focus, we will see the hidden picture, one of Christ manifested within his people. |

Evolution of Adam, The: What the Bible Does and Doesn't Say about Human Origins
by: Peter Enns
Publisher: Brazos Press Published: 2012-01-01 ASIN: 158743315X
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | Can Christianity and evolution coexist? Traditional Christian teaching presents Jesus as reversing the effects of the Fall of Adam. However, an evolutionary view of beginnings doesn't allow for a historical Adam, making evolution seemingly incompatible with what Genesis and the apostle Paul say about him. For Christians who accept evolution and want to take the Bible seriously, this presents a faith-shaking tension.
Peter Enns, an expert in biblical interpretation, offers a way forward by explaining how this tension is caused not by the discoveries of science but by false expectations about the biblical texts. Focusing on key biblical passages in the discussion, Enns demonstrates that the author of Genesis and the apostle Paul wrote to ask and answer ancient questions for ancient people; the fact that they both speak of Adam does not determine whether Christians can accept evolution. This thought-provoking book helps readers reconcile the teachings of the Bible with the widely held evolutionary view of beginnings and will appeal to anyone interested in the Christianity-evolution debate. |

Forged: Writing in the Name of God--Why the Bible's Authors Are Not Who We Think They Are
by: Bart D. Ehrman
Publisher: HarperOne Published: 2011-03-22 ASIN: B006QS02F8
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | It is often said, even by critical scholars who should know better, that “writing in the name of another” was widely accepted in antiquity. But New York Times bestselling author Bart D. Ehrman dares to call it what it was: literary forgery, a practice that was as scandalous then as it is today. In Forged, Ehrman’s fresh and original research takes readers back to the ancient world, where forgeries were used as weapons by unknown authors to fend off attacks to their faith and establish their church. So, if many of the books in the Bible were not in fact written by Jesus’s inner circle—but by writers living decades later, with differing agendas in rival communities—what does that do to the authority of Scripture? Ehrman investigates ancient sources to: - Reveal which New Testament books were outright forgeries.
- Explain how widely forgery was practiced by early Christian writers—and how strongly it was condemned in the ancient world as fraudulent and illicit.
- Expose the deception in the history of the Christian religion.
Ehrman’s fascinating story of fraud and deceit is essential reading for anyone interested in the truth about the Bible and the dubious origins of Christianity’s sacred texts. |
