| | More details | | The purpose of studying the Old Testament is to understand God and his redemptive work more fully. However, this goal is complicated by the fact that it was transmitted through a very different language and culture from our own. A Survey of the Old Testament provides an indispensable guide for undergraduate students and other readers by exploring the literary, historical, and theological issues behind the Old Testament and its various books. For each Old Testament book, the Survey addresses background information, purpose, message, structure, and major themes. Chapters introducing each major section of the Old Testament are included, as are chapters dealing with issues of interpretation, geography, archaeology, history, formation of the Old Testament canon, and the Old Testament's relationship to the New Testament. The text is enhanced throughout by maps, photos, timelines, and charts. This full-color third edition of a widely acclaimed textbook has been expanded and redesigned in both text and graphical elements, making it even more beneficial. |

Andrew Murray (May 9, 1828 â January 18, 1917) was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor. Murray considered missions to be "the chief end of the church."
Andrew pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town and Wellington, all in South Africa. He was a champion of the South African Revival of 1860.
In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM), along with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton. After Martha Osborn married George Howe, they formed the South East Africa General Mission (SEAGM) in 1891. SAGM and SEAGM merged in 1894. Because its ministry had spread into other African countries, the mission's name was changed to Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in 1965. AEF joined with SIM in 1998 and continues to this day.
He died on January 18, 1917, four months before his eighty-ninth birthday. Over the years he has influenced many, including Jessie Penn-Lewis, a key figure in the 1904-1905 Welsh Revival.

Answers To Prayer From George Müller's Narratives [Illustrated]
by: George Müller
Publisher: Published: 2009-04-20 ASIN: B00275EPMK

|
| | More details | Illustrated with 10 unique illustrations.
Mr. Brooks, in this compilation, has endeavored to select those incidents and practical remarks from Mr. Müller's Narratives, that show in an unmistakeable way, both to believers and unbelievers, the secret of believing prayer, the manifest hand of a living God, and His unfailing response, in His own time and way, to every petition which is according to His will.
The careful perusal of these extracts will thus further the great object which Mr. Müller had in view, without the necessity of reading through the various details of his "Narratives," details which Mr. Müller felt bound to give when writing periodically the account of God's dealings with him.
For those who have the opportunity, an examination of the "Autobiography of George Müller, or, a Million and a Half in Answer to Prayer" will richly repay the time spent upon it.
Mr. Müller's permission for the compilation of this volume is shown in the accompanying facsimile, (see p. 2), in the following words:
"If the extracts are given exactly as printed, and the punctuation exactly as in the book and in the connection in which the facts stand, I have no objection." |

Bible Revisited: A Science Fiction Retelling of Genesis
by: Daylord Moon
Publisher: CreateSpace Published: 2010-12-14 ASIN: 1456419684

|
| | More details | | The book of Genesis in Bible has a fantastic story of the encounters between God and mankind, and a literal interpretation of that story runs counter to the current knowledge of physical sciences that mankind has. It leads to a natural question â âCan a version of the Genesis be created which is not at odds with the current scientific knowledge, yet remain reasonably close to the original narrative?â In this book, you will find a science-fiction version of Bible, one in which the different encounters that happen between God and mankind are narrated in a different manner. Once you read the version in this book, you will definitely wonder whether the fictional narrative in this book may indeed be closer to the truth than a literal interpretation of the holy book. From the story of creation to the struggle between Jacob and the angel, you will find a narration of Genesis which is completely plausible and consistent with the current scientific knowledge. You will find an explanation for creation within seven days, the obtaining of knowledge by eating the forbidden fruit, the creation of Eve from Adam, Noahâs escape from the flood, the disruption of the tower of Babel with the rise of multiple languages, and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah with Lotâs wife turning into a pillar of salt. These and various other events of Genesis are connected together in a novel that will make an interesting read for the science fiction enthusiast as well as a Biblical scholar. |

Bible Studies in the Life of Paul Historical and Constructive (Annotated)

|
| | More details | The book of Acts shows in a very graphic way the rapid growth and marvelous progress of Christianity in the midst of great opposition. We see in process of fulfillment the promise of Jesus Christ to his disciples that they should receive power after the Holy Ghost had come upon them and that they should be witnesses unto Him "both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth." Those were earnest times and full of stirring events, when men went forth to conquer a hostile world not with swords, but by the preaching of a gospel of peace and good will. As soon as this proclamation was made in Judea and Samaria a new instrument was chosen by Jesus Christ, in Paul, to carry His message to the uttermost part of the earth. He thus became at once the chief character in the larger work of planting and developing churches outside of Palestine. The study of Paul's life shows the difficulties encountered, the doctrines taught, and the organization perfected in the early churches. "We here watch the dawn of the gospel which the Savior preached as it broadens gradually into the boundless day."
Bible Studies in the Life of Paul is designed to follow the author's Bible Studies in the Life of Christ and to show the work of the Great Apostle in carrying the gospel to a Gentile world. The aim is to present the work of Paul in a constructive and historical way. While there has been a careful consideration, on the part of the author, of disputed questions, only conclusions upon which there is a general agreement amongst scholars, and which can be consistently held, are presented. The great main facts of Paul's life and work stand forth unchallenged and the emphasis is placed upon them. This book is divided into three parts, Paul's preparation for his work, his missionary journeys, and his writings. This is a text book, and, with the analysis of each study and questions, is prepared for the use of normal and advanced Sunday-school classes, teachers' meetings, schools, colleges, and private study. This is the sixth book of the kind which the author has prepared and sent forth. The large favor with which the other books have been received, and the desire, first of all, of making the life and work of Paul even better known, have been the motives which have led to its preparation.

Chapter 1, Verse 1
by: Tom Allen
Publisher: Tom Allen (DBA) Alabaster Publishing Published: 2010-07-28 ASIN: B003XRE5Y4

|
| | More details | Some of us wait to see Jesus Christ literally âcoming in the clouds.â Others see the promise of his return fulfilled in his âcloudâ of witnesses.
âChapter 1, Verse 1â² explores the manifestation of Christ within us by providing a verse by verse explanation of the symbolism found in the Book of Revelation. It explains how and why the book reveals expressions of Christ within us as we experience the mystery of God. Here is the âreturnâ of Jesus Christ, the one who said, ââ¦I am with you always.â Christ is revealed in us, to us and through us.
Excerpt from 'Chapter 1, Verse 1': The scroll or âlittle bookâ found in the right hand of the Lamb of God has writing on both the front and back. Interestingly, the paper of ancient times used papyrus reeds cut into strips and placed horizontally to dry. Once dry, more papyrus strips were laid at right angles and glued in place. Finally, after polishing, the paper was ready to use. Writing was done with the grain. When writing on both sides of the paper, as with the scroll, the writing on one side would be written at a ninety degree angle when compared to the opposite side, due to the grain of the paper. Whoever reads the scroll would have to, at times, turn it ninety degrees to understand it.
The writing on both the front and back of the scroll is similar to the way information about the revealing of Christ is given to us in the Book of Revelation. We have to look at Revelation from a different angle, a different perspective, if we are to understand its meaning. The Book of Revelation is like a stereo-gram picture, a picture hidden within a picture. On the surface it paints an image of war, famine, death, and destruction. But when we change our focus, we will see the hidden picture, one of Christ manifested within his people. |

Christ, The Way, The Truth, and The Life

|
| | More details | | "CHRISTIAN READER,-After the foregoing address, I need not put thee to much more trouble: only I shall say, that he must needs be a great stranger in our Israel, or sadly smitten with that epidemic plague of indifferency, which hath infected many of this generation, to a benumbing of them, and rendering them insensible and unconcerned in the matters of God, and of their own souls, and sunk deep in the gulf of dreadful inconsideration, who seeth not, or taketh no notice of, nor is troubled at the manifest and terrible appearances of the inexpressibly great hazard, our all, as Christians in this life, is this day exposed into. I mean the mystery of the gospel of the grace of God, wherein the exceeding riches of his grace, in his kindness towards us, through Christ Jesus, hath been shown. We have enjoyed for a considerable time, a clear and powerful dispensation hereof, in great purity and plenty; but, alas! is it not manifest to all, that will not willfully shut their eyes, that this mercy and goodness of God hath been wickedly abused, and the pure administration of his grace and love perfidiously sinned away, by this apostate generation. " John Brown was an American abolitionist, who advocated and practiced armed insurrection as a means to end all slavery. He led the Pottawatomie Massacre in 1856 in Bleeding Kansas and made his name in the unsuccessful raid at Harpers Ferry in 1859. President Abraham Lincoln said he was a "misguided fanatic" and Brown has been called "the most controversial of all 19th-century Americans." Brown's actions are often referred to as "patriotic treason", depicting both sides of the argument. |

| | More details | David, unlike any Bible character before him, had the charisma to inspire a great nation. Yet in other ways he was a most ordinary man--often gripped by destructive passion, rocked by personal tragedy, and motivated by political gain. Yet, he is the one character the Bible describes as a "man after God's own heart." In this first volume of the "Great Lives" series Charles Swindoll shows how David proved his love for God many times over in an extraordinary life that left an enduring legacy of faith. |

Drop Dead Beautiful

| | More details | | The first and only book to explore the concept of the Messiah in light of the radical new evidence just discovered in the recently released Dead Sea Scrolls. Recent figures in the news, such as the self-proclaimed messiah David Koresh of the Branch Davidians, and the prophetic Orthodox Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, are confounding reminders of the forceful vitality of messianism in the modern world. They are also sobering indicators that contemporary society needs to take seriously and understand the messianic mind set. In "The Scepter And The Star", biblical scholar John J. Collins unearths the seeds of messianic thought in the Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and other ancient literature. Many of Collins' conclusions hinge on his recent discovery of profoundly important material in the Dead Sea Scrolls. In 1991, nearly fifty years after they were originally found, the entire collection of the Dead Sea Scrolls was finally released to the public. Collins was one of the first scholars to examine the scrolls and realized that they contained enormously significant messianic texts. "The Scepter And The Star" will be the first scholarly work to explore fully the impact this new evidence has on our understanding of Jewish apocalypticism and messianism. In addition, Collins examines the crucial links and similarities between Jewish and Christian models of the messiah. How did Jewish communities, living in the turbulent century before the birth of Christ, envision the end of time? Did Jewish messianic figures influence the development of the Christian Messiah? Here, in careful detail and cogent, accessible analysis, Collins explains the birth of messianic thought and its repercussions for Jews and Christians alike in ancient - as well as modern-times. |

Carson argues that when talking about what should not be done in exegesis, the hope is to interpret the Word of God aright. From the author: "It is often made a charge against professing Christians that their religion has very little to do with common morality. The taunt has sharpened multitudes of gibes and been echoed in all sorts of tones: it is very often too true and perfectly just, but if ever it is, let it be distinctly understood that it is not so because of Christian men's religion but in spite of it. Their bitterest enemy does not condemn them half so emphatically as their own religion does: the sharpest censure of others is not so sharp as the rebukes of the New Testament. If there is one thing which it insists upon more than another, it is that religion without morality is nothingâthat the one test to which, after all, every man must submit is, what sort of char- acter has he and how has he behavedâis he pure or foul? All high-flown pretension, all fervid emotion has at last to face the question which little children ask, 'Was he a good man?'" |

Gospel of Mark, The (Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture)
by: Mary Healy

|
| | More details | | There is an increasing hunger among Catholics to study the Bible in depth and in a way that integrates Scripture with Catholic doctrine, worship, and daily life. In October 2008, a meeting of the world Synod of Bishops scheduled by Pope Benedict XVI will focus on "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church." Coinciding with that meeting is the launch of the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture (CCSS), a series that responds to the desire of Catholics to access the living Word of God. The Gospel of Mark is the first of seventeen volumes, which will cover the entire New Testament. Written by trusted Catholic biblical scholars, these commentaries interpret Scripture in the light of Catholic tradition. Accessibly written yet substantive, the CCSS fills a gap in the available literature by offering commentaries that cover more than brief study guides but are less daunting than scholarly commentaries. |
