Jesus on Every Page of the Old Testament?

"But Jesus didn't come along until the New Testament," someone says, "What's He doing in the Old?" In his new book, 101 Portraits of Jesus in the Hebrew Scriptures, author Bob Beasley, a graduate of Westminster Theological Seminary, seeks to answer that question in many more than 101 ways. In fact, even though the Old Testament -- the Hebrew Scriptures -- was written 2,000 to 500 years prior to Jesus' earthly ministry, some say the Lord may be found on its every page.

Just as a great novel or movie will provide early warnings of things to come later on in the book or screen, the Old Testament is full of types, foreshadowings, specific prophesies, mighty works, and pre-incarnate appearances of the Savior. He is prefigured by men like Adam, Noah, Joseph, Moses, and David. Jesus is foreshadowed by furniture (yes, furniture), rocks, food, a snake, doorways, trees, colors, animals--in many, many ways. He appears as smoke and fire and as the mysterious Angel of the Lord. All of this hundreds of years before born to Mary in Bethlehem.

On the road to Emmaus following His resurrection, Jesus spoke with some of His followers. Luke tells us; And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the [Hebrew] Scriptures concerning himself (Luke 24:27). In a compact and readable 101 chapters surveying Genesis to Malachi, Beasley merely scratches the surface of the wonderful truths of Jesus in the Old Testament, sure to deepen anyone's understanding of and love for the entire Bible. This is a book for everyone--new Christians as well as old, and also for those seeking answers as to whether of not the Bible is trustworthy. The impact of hundreds of foreshadowings of Jesus is truly powerful. 101 Portraits will open the Scriptures for you as never before.

In Abraham or The Obedience of Faith, F.B. Meyer tells the story of Abraham, who lived a life of faithfulness to God. Abraham's life is a witness to the fact that faith can grow in our lives. "But wherever faith is, it is the link with Omnipotence; the channel for God's communications; the wire along which the Fire of Heaven may travel. And as it is used according to the promptings of the Divine Spirit, and in obedience to His commands, it will grow. It grew in Abraham. It will grow in us." Frederick Brotherton Meyer was a Baptist pastor and evangelist in England, a contemporary and friend of D. L. Moody and A. C. Dixon. Meyer was involved in ministry and inner city mission work on both sides of the Atlantic, authored 40 religious books, numerous articles and was described as The Archbishop of the Free Churches.

The Bible calls David "a man after God's own heart." But what does that really mean and how does that apply to us today? With his unusual warmth, clarity, and simplicity, Dr. McGee takes a look at the life of David, helping readers move beyond the exciting action stories and into the heart of what David's experiences have to teach us. Dr. McGee said, "Perhaps the most familiar Bible story to every boy and girl who has attended Sunday School is that of David and Goliath. It is a thrilling action story. But the greater thrill is the splendid spiritual truths that are applicable to our present-day lives as believers.

David, unlike any Bible character before him, had the charisma to inspire a great nation. Yet in other ways he was a most ordinary man-often gripped by destructive passion, rocked by personal tragedy, and motivated by political gain. Yet, he is the one character the Bible describes as a "man after God's own heart." In this first volume of the "Great Lives" series Charles Swindoll shows how David proved his love for God many times over in an extraordinary life that left an enduring legacy of faith.

Elijah the Tishbite. He stepped out of nowhere to become a significant prophet of God. The rugged, gaunt prophet from the obscure town of Tishbeh became God's powerful instrument of confrontation.

Alone, Elijah faced off with over four hundred prophets of the false god Baalâ¦and won. Yet, on another occasion, he became so terrified of a woman that he ran for his life. He was a man who God sent His ravens to fee. A man who God loved so much that He prepared a special chariot and horses of fire to transport him from earth to heaven. He was Elijah-the man in a whirlwind, the humble hero.

"Like a meteor, he flashed across the inky blackness of Israel's spiritual night."

-J. Oswald Sanders

Like Elijah, we're all subject to times of bravery and times of fear. One day we're able to face life with a smile; the next, we feel crushed by its oppressive weight. We vacillate from courageous to cowardly, from hopeful to hopeless. Like Elijah, we are ordinary people with seemingly overwhelming problems. And the answer is in God alone as the name "Elijah" indicates: It means, "The Lord is my God."

He lived courageously with his peers and walked humbly with his God.

Where are great leaders like Elijah today? Uncompromisingly strong, yet self-controlled. Disciplined, yet forgiving. Audaciously courageous, yet kind. Heroic in the heat of battle, yet humble in the aftermath.

We see a few such men and women, but the list is tragically short. Rarely does someone model these invaluable traits more obviously than God's mighty prophet Elijah, whose calling was anything but calm and free from conflict. Nevertheless, as you are about to discover in this book. Elijah exemplified true heroism and genuine humility amid the relentless pressure of battle.

Elijah: A Man of Heroism and Humility is the fifth volume in the best-selling Great Lives from God's Word series by Charles Swindoll. The series also includes such powerful biographies as Joseph, David, Esther, and Moses.

Exploring the depths of Elijah's fascinating life as a prophet of God, Swindoll does not gloss over his human weaknesses; rather, he presents an honest picture of this ordinary man who God transformed into His personal spokesman to confront idolatry and evil in the ancient world. You will find that it's a life worth emulating.

In a world that has lost its way, due in part to the lack of balanced, godly leadership, we are more than ever in need of a few Elijah-like men and women who are not afraid to live courageously among their peers as they walk humbly with their God.

"May this book establish deep within you a desire to stand strong for what is right as you bow low before Him who is worthy of your trust and obedience."-Charles Swindoll

The place: Persia. The time: fifth-century BC. The Jews were threatened with genocide. A decree ordered the extermination of young and old, women and children. The book of Esther describes how this crisis was averted through the bravery of Esther, the wisdom of Mordecai and the unity of the Jewish people. Debra Reid's approachable commentary helps us see even more clearly in the book of Esther the God who quietly --and sometimes unexpectedly-- works behind the scenes to order the events of our lives. This completely new volume replaces the previous editon of Esther in the Tyndale Commentary series written by Joyce Baldwin.

In Great Lives: Esther, Dr. Swindoll delves into the real-life story of Queen Esther showing how the qualities that empowered her godly life are available for every Christian.

Everyone loves a transformation story. Rags to riches. Plain to beautiful. Weak to strong. Esther's story is that, but it is much more. It is the account of God working mightily in one life and how godly attributes like courage, dignity, wisdom, and strength can thwart evil and replace terror with joy. Chuck Swindoll celebrates the story of Esther and reveals how every Christian can live a transformation story.
