"In the Beginning...": A Catholic Understanding of the Story of Creation and the Fall
by: Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger
Publisher: Our Sunday Visitor Published: 1990-01 ASIN: 0879734388
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | In four superb homilies and a concluding essay, Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, provides a clear and inspiring exploration of the Genesis creation narratives.
While the stories of the worldâs creation and the fall of humankind have often been subjected to reductionism of one sort or another â literalists treat the Bible as a science textbook whereas rationalists divorce God from creation â Ratzinger presents a rich, balanced Catholic understanding of these early biblical writings and attests to their enduring vitality.
Beginning each homily with a text selected from the first three chapters of Genesis, Ratzinger discusses, in turn, God the creator, the meaning of the biblical creation accounts, the creation of human beings, and sin and salvation; in the appendix he unpacks the beneficial consequences of faith in creation.
Expertly translated from German, these reflections set out a reasonable and biblical approach to creation. âIn the Beginning . . .â also serves as an excellent homiletic resource for priests and pastors. |

A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament

Until now, the English-speaking student of Hebrew has had to choose between expensive and complex large-scale lexicons or pocket-size glossaries that make no pretense of keeping abreast of current scholarship. This edition is ideal for the beginning to intermediate student of Biblical Hebrew, offering Hebrew words definitions needed to translate Old Testament passages. Hebrew words are arranged in Hebrew alphabetical order by root form. This lexicon does not use Strongs numbers. This edition is based on the first, second and third editions of Koehler-Baumgartner Lexicon in Veteris Testamenti Libros. Edited by William A. Holladay. Familiarity with Biblical Hebrew necessary. |

A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant Society
by: Eugene H. Peterson
Publisher: IVP Books Published: 2000-06-30 ASIN: 0830822577
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | As a society, we are no less obsessed with the immediate than when Eugene Peterson first wrote this Christian classic. If anything, email and the Internet may have intensified our quest for the quick fix. But Peterson's time-tested prescription for discipleship remains the same--a long obedience in the same direction. Tucked away in the Hebrew Psalter, Peterson discovered "an old dog-eared songbook," the Songs of Ascents that were sung by pilgrims on their way up to worship in Jerusalem. In these songs (Psalms 120-134) Peterson finds encouragement for modern pilgrims as we learn to grow in worship, service, joy, work, happiness, humility, community and blessing. This 20th anniversary edition of A Long Obedience in the Same Direction features these Psalms in Peterson's widely acclaimed paraphrase, The Message. He also includes an epilogue in which he reflects on the themes of this book and his ministry during the twenty years since its original publication. |

A Second Chance : the Book of Jonah
by: Richard H. Vollnogle
Publisher: Amazon Published: 2011-12-23 ASIN: B006PW0N6S
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | This book is about getting a second chance (or more). It may be considered to be relatively short being around 10k words in length. The introduction gives you some of the subjects that is dealt with in the book. Family relationships, spiritual relationships, socialization, cultural issues, what to do when you "screw up", and choices - how you deal with them. It is not meant to be an exhaustive treatise but a book that will make you think. We all "screw up" sometime in our lives and then what do we do. Jonah is a great book about showing what happens when we make choices and the consequences of our actions both positively and negatively. The book of Jonah is a favorite Old Testament chronicle to the young and old. I feel it is an underutilized book found in the Minor Prophets. Many just consider it just a "fish" story. Yet, God saw fit to reference it in His earthly ministry. The book deals with prophecy, the will of God, and how and why God himself is involved in our daily lives. God reveals himself to men and mankind by giving them a second or more chances.

An Introduction to the New Testament
by: D. A. Carson
Publisher: Zondervan Published: 2005-08-16 ASIN: 0310238595
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | An Introduction to the New Testament focuses on 'special introduction' that is historical questions dealing with authorship, date, sources, purpose, destination, and so forth. This approach stands in contrast to recent texts that concentrate more on literary form, rhetorical criticism, and historical parallels---topics the authors don't minimize, but instead think are better given extended treatment in exegesis courses. By refocusing on the essentials, An Introduction to the New Testament ensures that the New Testament books will be accurately understood within historical settings. For each New Testament document, the authors also provide a substantial summary of that book's content, discuss the book's theological contribution to the overall canon, and give an account of current studies on that book, including recent literary and social-science approaches to interpretation. This second edition reflects significant revision and expansion from the original, making this highly acclaimed text even more valuable. * A new chapter provides a historical survey examining Bible study method through the ages. * The chapter on Paul has been expanded to include an analysis of debates on the 'new perspective.' * The discussion of New Testament epistles has been expanded to form a new chapter. This new edition will help a new generation of students better grasp the message of the New Testament. |

Chasing Daylight: Seize the Power of Every Moment
by: Erwin Raphael McManus
Publisher: Thomas Nelson Published: 2006-01-10 ASIN: 0785281134
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | In this inspiring book (formerly Seizing Your Divine Moment), Erwin McManus uses the biblical account of Israel's war with the Philistines (1 Samuel 13 and 14) and the characters of Saul and Jonathan to demonstrate the difference between living a life of purpose and adventure, and living one of apathy and missed opportunity. In the midst of a less-than-hopeful battle, Saul rested beneath a tree as Jonathan seized the divine moment that would impact the future of Israel. Through this story McManus artfully illustrates the eight characteristics of an adventurer's heart, what he calls "the Jonathan factor." Using powerful examples from his own life and ministry, along with fresh biblical teaching, McManus asserts that God crafts divine moments specific to each of us-priceless opportunities for us to actively engage in God's plan. By developing the characteristics McManus outlines, Christians can move from mundane to miraculous living. |

Did Adam and Eve Really Exist?: Who They Were and Why You Should Care
by: C. John Collins
Publisher: Crossway Books Published: 2011-05-04 ASIN: 1433524252
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | Throughout history, most Christians have believed that Adam and Eve were actual persons, of whom we are all descendants. Some Christians today, however, readily dismiss the historical consensus, arguing that those same Christians also believed the earth was the center of the universe. Understandably, there are reasons to doubt the traditional view . . . and yet rarely are those doubts humbly subjected to serious scholarship. C. John Collins invites both doubts and scholarship to the table. Applying well-informed, critical thinking to questions raised by theologians and scientists alike, Collins examines the historicity and relevance of a real Adam and Eve, ultimately answering the questions: Did Adam and Eve really exist? And why should we care? |
