A Christmas Crossing

|
| | More details | Thrust into a war she did not choose, Sarah Fanum yearns for simpler times. Times when all she had to worry about were bad crops or bad weather. Unfortunately, fate had other plans. Set in 1776, my short story, A Christmas Crossing describes the night that changed the course of the Revolutionary War. It is not your typical Christmas story, but one that has affected every fabric of our lives as an American.
I was inspired to write A Christmas Crossing after visiting Yorktown, VA. I have always been enamored by the Revolutionary War and wanted to share my love for history with my love for Christmas. I hope you enjoy it.

A Foxfire Christmas: Appalachian Memories and Traditions
Publisher: The University of North Carolina Press Published: 1996-11-01 ASIN: 080784618X

|
| | More details | | This captivating book of recollections celebrates the holiday traditions of Appalachian families as passed from one generation to the next. Based on Foxfire students' interviews with neighbors and family members, the memories shared here are from a simpler time, when gifts were fewer but perhaps more precious, and holiday tables were laden with traditional favorites. More than just reminiscences, however, A Foxfire Christmas includes instructions for recreating many of the ornaments, toys, and recipes that make up so many family traditions, from Chicken and Dumplings to Black Walnut Cake, and from candy pulls to corn husk dolls and hand-whittled toy cars. |

A Simple Christmas: Twelve Stories That Celebrate the True Holiday Spirit
by: Mike Huckabee
Publisher: Sentinel HC Published: 2009-11-03 ASIN: 1595230629

|
| | More details | The New York Times bestseller by the former governor and presidential candidate-an instant classic, reissued for 2010.
Christmas has become synonymous with shopping, overindulging, and stress. But according to Mike Huckabee, that was never God's intention. Going back to the Nativity, Christmas is supposed to be about simple things: faith, love, family, and hope. The hard part, in today's crazy world, is remembering that those simple things are the most precious.
Huckabee recounts twelve Christmas memories that range from his childhood in Arkansas to his years as a young husband and father to his time as a governor and then a presidential candidate. These true stories will help you smile, take a deep breath, and maybe slow down your own holiday treadmill.
For instance, as kids, Mike and his sister would sneak open their gifts before Christmas, play with them, then rewrap them so their parents wouldn't notice. The plan worked great until one Christmas when young Mike unwrapped a brand-new football...that was covered in mud. That led to a powerful lesson about patience and a reminder that the best Christmases are the simple ones.

An Angel's Story
by: Max Lucado
Publisher: Thomas Nelson Published: 2002-10-08 ASIN: 0849917786

|
| | More details | Spiritual beings populate the stories of Scripture. Angels singing. Demons infecting. Heavenly hosts fighting . . . Ignore the armies of God and Satan and you ignore the heart of Scripture. Ever since the snake tempted Eve in Eden, we've known: there is more to this world than meets the eye. In this classic Christmas novella, best-selling author Max Lucado imagines the spiritual conflict that surrounded the coming of Christ. Surely there was much. If Satan could pre-empt Christ in the cradle, there'd be no Christ on the cross. Journey back in time to the very throne of God ... and witness firsthand the glory, the wonder, and the battle that took place on the very first Christmas. |

Bra, Humbug! Holiday Tales for Troubled Times
by: Lulu Dean
Publisher: Lulu Dean Published: 2011-12-23 ASIN: B006PM16V4
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | In this collection of humorous treats, tales and tidbits, Lulu Dean covers the best and worst of family holiday traditions, the danger of keeping dirty little secrets, the heartbreak of shopping for plus-size holiday fashions and the aftermath of Santa’s arrest for public intoxication at the shopping mall.
Blend an active imagination, an irreverent eye for detail and a passion for plus-size divinity—and you’re up to your sit biscuits in Lulu’s slightly skewed view of the holidays.
Have time for a little taste? Here are a few teensy weensy bites from the book:
ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS MY TWO NEW BOOBS
Every holiday season, the members of The Tittle-Tattle Book Club gather for a few cocktails, some edible tidbits and an anonymous gift exchange. Although the annual event is always fun and festive, I doubt if the get-together we held last year will ever be bested in terms of alcohol consumed, diets broken or secrets revealed.
As I recall, the fun began three hours into the evening when Patti Cannon finished her fourth margarita, climbed atop the coffee table and ripped open her jade green silk blouse.
â€Look at these things!  she wailed. â€These are not fun bags! These are not knockers! These are miniature marshmallows!
SOMEWHERE BETWEEN NAUGHTY & NICE
Since I don’t know Eleanor all that well, I kept my distance for a few minutes to see if the crying jag would come to a close on its own. But when her shoulders began trembling uncontrollably and she knocked over a display of biodegradable wrapping paper, it became readily apparent that someone needed to intervene.
I glanced around to see if another Good Samaritan would do the dirty work. Hank Winslow was arguing with his wife about spending too much on presents for their grandchildren. A teenaged boy I’d never seen before was shoplifting a box of condoms. And Clive Ladue was perched behind the cash register listening patiently to Winnie McCoy, a chinless, pear-shaped monstrosity with more money than common sense, prattle on about what she was giving herself for Christmas.
I’M DREAMING OF A WIDE CHRISTMAS
I was in the changing room at Size Matters, wriggling into a pair of gold lame harem pants, when I suddenly heard the last sound a woman ever wants to notice while trying on clothing in public.
â€Oh, my God,  I said, spinning around to look in the mirror. â€Was that really…
And it was. The pants had ripped clear down the back and my significantly abundant badonkadonk was winking seductively at its identical twin in the floor length mirror. As I stared in horror at the expansive reflection of my rubbery caboose, someone knocked on the dressing room door.
THE GIFT OF WRAP
I’ve never been good with scissors, double-sided tape makes me break out in a cold sweat and my bows usually wind up looking like deflated balloon animals. But when Barb Sinclair called from Tip Top Staffing and asked if I was available for a temporary assignment wrapping gifts at Style Rodeo, I immediately and gratefully accepted her offer.
â€Fantastic!  Barb said. â€Can you be there in an hour?
I glanced down at the candy cane shrapnel on the front of my SpongeBob T-shirt and the vanilla cake crumbs sprinkled on my sweatpants.
â€Sure,  I said, wondering how I was going to accomplish the impossible. â€That should be a breeze.
About the Author
In her dreams, Lulu Dean has never ruined one of her husband’s shirts in the laundry, rarely eats twice her weight in red velvet cake and almost never holds a grudge.
In the real world, however, she is the inquisitive, far from willowy and occasionally impatient author of Does This Pink Slip Make Me Look Fat?, Big Girls Rule, Happy Nude Year!, Big Girls Bounce and Bra, Humbug.

| | More details | *Illustrated *Includes Table of Contents
Christmas is the most famous holiday of the year, and the word itself evokes images of Santa Claus, Christmas trees, lights, the baby Jesus, and, of course, presents. Instantly, well known Christmas carols ring in your ears, or maybe you even picture nutcrackers or Scrooge and Tiny Tim.
Christmas has been popular for centuries, and it only continues to get more popular today, with Christmas season extending months in advance of December 25. And though much has been written of Christmas, its exact origins are still mysterious. Historians are unsure what date Jesus was born on, or whether Christmas Day coincides with previous pagan holidays.
Regardless, Christmas is always the perfect time for holiday cheer, and reading classic Christmas stories like A Christmas Carol or Twas the Night before Christmas. This edition of Samuel McChord Crothers’ By the Christmas Fire is specially formatted with a Table of Contents and is illustrated with over a dozen Christmas-related pictures, including trees, the Nativity Scene, Santa Claus, historical depictions of the holiday, and more.

| | More details | | Betty Kowalski isn't looking forward to the holidays. She just can't seem to find Christmas in her heart. There's church, of course. But who can she bake for these days? And who would care whether or not she pulled out the Christmas decorations? Her new neighbor just adds to the problem. He's doing home improvements that don't appear to be improving much of anything. These days when Betty looks out the window, she sees a beat-up truck, a pile of junk, lots of blue tarps, and--horror of horrors--an old pink toilet. But when a mangy dog appears at her doorstep, the stage is set for Betty to learn a very important lesson about what Christmas is all about. This contemporary Christmas story is a timely yet gentle reminder that God can work miracles through something as seemingly insignificant as a little brown dog. |

|
| | More details | Every year, we say we’re going to cut back, simplify, and have a family Christmas that focuses on the real reason for the season—Jesus. But every year, advertisements beckon, the children plead, and it seems easier just to indulge our wants and whims. Overspending, overeating, materialism, and busyness rob us of our peace and joy and rob Jesus of his rightful role as the center of our celebration. This Christmas, cut through the hype that leaves you exhausted and broke at the end of the year. Instead, experience the peace of knowing that God is truly with us, the joy of giving sacrificially, and the love of a Savior who gave everything he had for us. In five short, engaging chapters, Pastor Mike Slaughter inspires readers to approach Christmas differently, and be transformed in the process.

A strange older woman with scraggly gray hair and jewelry that jangles as she walks, Matilda is certainly not the most likely person to buy the old Barton Building on the town's quaint main street. When it becomes apparent that her new shop doesn't fit the expectations of Parrish Springs residents, a brouhaha erupts. After all, Christmas is approaching, and the last thing the town needs is a junky shop run by someone who looks and acts like a gypsy. But as townsfolk venture into the strange store, they discover that old memories can bring new life and healing.
Once again, Melody Carlson delivers a Christmas story that will touch hearts and delight the senses. Sure to be a classic, The Christmas Shoppe is filled with the special magic the best Christmas stories share--that intangible mixture of nostalgia, joy, and a little bit of magic. |

Dakota Christmas (Kindle Single)
by: Joseph Bottum
Publisher: Published: 2011-11-30 ASIN: B006GP07GU
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | A memoir of childhood Christmases on the South Dakota plains. By turns sweet and comic, sentimental and serious, Joseph Bottum's "Dakota Christmas" is an instant Christmas classic. In this beautifully written account of the mad joys and wild emotions of Christmas for children, Bottum captures the universal spirit of the season even while he recounts his memories with a sharp particularity that brings them alive for readers.
"Her hair was the same thin shade of gray as the weather-beaten pickets of the fence around her frozen garden," he writes of one chance Christmas encounter. "She had a way with horses, and she was alone on Christmas Eve. There is little in my life I regret as much as that I would not stay for just one cookie, just one cup of tea."
"Joseph Bottum is one of America’s most gifted writers, with a perfect ear and a matchless style," the essayist Andrew Ferguson notes of "Dakota Christmas." And "to watch him deck the halls with his customary humor and generosity of spirit is glad tidings indeed--guaranteed to make your Yuletide bright."
"Families have always loved brief Christmas classics that could be read aloud by the fire," adds Michael Novak. "Joseph Bottum's 'Dakota Christmas' is such a classic." |
