A Dictionary of Popes (Oxford Paperback Reference)

|
| | More details | | This fascinating dictionary gives concise accounts of every officially recognized pope in history, from St Peter to Pope Benedict XVI, as well as all of their irregularly elected rivals, the so-called antipopes. Each pope and antipope's entry covers his family and social background and pre-papal career as well as his activities in office. Also, an appendix provides a detailed discussion and analysis of many topics including the theory that there has been a female pope. This new edition reflects the very latest in papal research and contains additional information in the further reading sections of each entry, making the book an even more useful starting place for research into specific pontiffs. Moreover, the entries are arranged chronologically, creating a continuous history of the papacy over almost 2,000 years. It reveals how, for much of that history, spiritual and temporal power has been inextricably mingled in the person of the pope. A fascinating read for students of theology and history, as well as the general reader with an interest in Christian history. |

Behind Locked Doors: A History of the Papal Elections
by: Prof. Frederic J. Baumgartner
Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan Published: 2005-04-01 ASIN: 1403969620

|
| | More details | Since the early seventeenth century, whenever a pope has died, the Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church have convened in Rome behind locked doors to elect a successor--and all eyes focus on The Eternal City. The Papal Conclave is an event like no other. Highly secretive and conducted behind the doors of the Sistine Chapel, it happens only a few times every century. Cardinals meet en masse in their scarlet robes. Throngs of the faithful stand watch in St. Peterâs Square. Finally, white smoke billows from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel signaling the election of a new pontiff. In Behind Locked Doors, Frederic J. Baumgartner evokes the high drama of this event while simultaneously providing a comprehensive and rigorous history of the papal elections. Behind Locked Doors is a fascinating look at the death of popes and the centuries-old transfer of Vatican power from one man to the next.

Benedict XV: The Unknown Pope and the Pursuit of Peace
by: John Pollard

|
| | More details | | When Joseph Ratzinger chose the Papal name Benedict XVI he consciously bought into a legacy that has stretched over nearly 1500 years. From Bonosus in 575 to Bendict XV in 1914 the Benedictine legacy has been one of turmoil. Benedict XV is one of the least known Popes of the 20th century, but one of the most important. Elected in 1914 after the outbreak of the First World War he dedicated his Papacy to achieving peace throughout Europe. In August 1917 he offered a 'Peace Note' to the warring powers to bring about the cessation of hostilities, engaged in humanitarian activities and was instrumental is setting up the Save the Children Fund. Benedict sought to heal the wounds created by the 'Modernist crisis' of his predecessor, Pius X reign, but only after the end of World War I was he able to focus on matters within the church. Despite his innate conservatism he took up progressive positions on both the Easter Rite Churches and Catholicism's missionary outlook. He died relatively young yet his reign is one of the most important of any in the twentieth Century. This is the first biography of Pope Benedict XV published in English in over forty years. The author has made use of hitherto unavailable archival sources, particularly those of the Vatican previously unpublished private papers of his family. |

Benedict XVI: An Intimate Portrait
by: Peter Seewald
Publisher: Ignatius Press Published: 2008-12 ASIN: 1586171909

|
| | More details | | In the person of Pope Benedict XVI, one of the most significant of Europe's intellectuals is heading-up the Vatican. The journalist Peter Seewald, who has known Ratzinger since 1992, conducted the "longest interviews in church history" with him, for two books which were best-sellers world-wide, Salt of the Earth, God and the World. Now he describes these intensive encounters in detail for the first time, and draws a portrait of this brilliant theologian who has put his life entirely at the service of the Catholic Church. Above and beyond that, this book is also the story of a long dialogue which changed Seewald's life. Many people are trying to understand who Benedict XVI really is. On one point they are all agreed: in the person of Joseph Ratzinger, the chair of Peter is occupied by one of the most brilliant minds in the world. Peter Seewald's portrait of Benedict recounts details about the personality and life of Benedict which were hitherto completely unknown. |

|
| | More details | | The Papacy is the oldest and the most successful institution in the world. Asking the Pope to abandon or water down Catholic doctrine would be like asking him to abolish his own office. Joseph Ratzinger has been the most powerful figures in the Catholic Chuirch after John Paul II for decades. It is entirely right that he should have the opportunity to serve the Church as Pope for he is so obviously head and shoulders above the rest. And yet Benedict XVI remains a mysterious figure, who has operated from behind closed doors-most recently the doors of the Congregation for the Doctrine of The Faith in Rome. There will be studies of Ratzinger's theology. Indeed there have already been such. But who is the man of flesh, blood and spirit behind the not so public persona. Laurence Paul Hemming has observed the Papacy and the events leading up to the election of the present Pope meticulously. He has written a charming and warm portrait of The Holy Father to make this highly intellectual man more accessible to a wide public. When Benedict XVI declared himself 'a simple and humble labourer in the Lord's vineyard' he gave the world an early indication of his style. A passionate defender of the Faith yet a man anxious to listen. |

Catholicism on Trial Series - Book 2 of 7 - The Bible Alone vs. The Catholic Mass - LIST PRICE REDUCED from $16.95. You SAVE 60%
| | More details | Critics take the Catholic Church to trial in this Series, but they are shocked to find themselves silenced by Catholic Representatives using Scripture itself.
This trial takes place in an International Court where Catholic representatives must demonstrate that Jesus Christ is truly present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity under the "accidental appearances" of bread and wine. And they must do so using only Scripture and very restricted historical evidence.
Now, more than ever, a trial concerning the Mass is critical to determine whether it will be Protestants or Catholics who must die to the ego in order to do the will of Jesus Christ. And a recent statement from Pope Benedict XVI made clear that Protestant communities cannot lay claim to the title of "Church" because they lack what the Catholic Church considers "essential to be a Church". This has raised the ire of Protestants around the world because nothing is more lacking to them than the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
This trial will deal primarily with one issue. It will be a battle over whether or not Jesus literally meant it when He said,
"Take and eat, this is My Body which is given up for you", and in like manner, the cup, take and drink, "This is the Cup of the New and Everlasting Covenant in My Blood that will be shed for you and for many that sins may be forgiven. Do this in Memory of me".
Once the facts are presented, several other issues that swirl around the words of "Consecration" will be drawn into the vortex of what is at stake, and what is at stake in this trial is nothing short of sensational.
If Protestants are proven wrong it would mean they must embrace the Catholic Mass which they find repugnant for many reasons. And worst of all, they would not be able to hide the shame of having lived in open rebellion against the most Sacred Reality in existence, and the entire world would know about it. It would mean that Protestants could no longer go about referring to the Mass as "Hocus Pocus Dominocus", the greatest magic trick of them all. |

Crossing the Threshold of Love: A New Vision of Marriage
by: Mary Shivanandan
Publisher: Catholic University of America Press Published: 1999-04 ASIN: 0813209412

|
| | More details | | The papal encyclical Humanae Vitae predicted the disintegration of marriage and family life, partly as a result of the widespread use of contraception. Pope John Paul II has since addressed the problem by articulating a fresh understanding of marriage, love, and sexuality which takes account of the dignity of the human person, and especially of women. In this most exhaustive and scholarly assessment of John Paul II's Christian anthropology ever written, Mary Shivanandan examines the scientific data and the theological analysis that underlie his teachings on marriage and sexuality. Her book will be an essential text for the study of the development, meaning, and implications of Catholic doctrine in this controversial area. It is both lucid and multi-disciplinary. Its appearance marks a new stage in the debate over sexuality in the modern world. |

Destined for Liberty: The Human Person in the Philosophy of Karol Wojtya/John Paul II
by: Jaroslaw Kupczak
Publisher: Catholic Univ of Amer Pr Published: 2000-11 ASIN: 0813209854
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | | In this compelling new work, Jaroslaw Kupczak, O.P., presents a complete introduction to John Paul IIâs theory of the human person. Both enlightening and accessible, the book traces the development of Karol Wojtylaâs theology from his earlier and lesser-known writings--"The Habilitation Thesis" and "Lublin Lectures"--to his more popular writings--"Love and Responsibility" and "The Acting Person." The author finds that Wojtyla is a remarkably consistent thinker. Unlike many of his contemporaries, his thought has never undergone any intellectual revolution or change. His earlier writings thus make possible a fuller appreciation of the more popular texts and Papal encyclicals. Throughout the entire book, the author patiently guides the reader through the complexity of Wojtylaâs thought. Kupczak presents analytical commentary of Wojtylaâs key philosophical texts, most of which are still not available in English. Given his access to the original Polish texts, he provides a missing link between the moral teaching of John Paul II and the early stages of his intellectual career. Kupczak carefully examines the main sources of Wojtylaâs moral theory: the mystical theology of St. John of the Cross, the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas, and modern phenomenology, especially that of Max Scheler. Among the key anthropological concepts presented and analyzed are: ethical values and human freedom, the relation between freedom and truth, the conscience and consciousness, the human body, and the process of human cognition. |

Dominion of God: Christendom and Apocalypse in the Middle Ages
by: Brett Edward Whalen
Publisher: Harvard University Press Published: 2009-10-01 ASIN: 0674036298

|
| | More details | Brett Whalen explores the compelling belief that Christendom would spread to every corner of the earth before the end of time. During the High Middle Agesâan era of crusade, mission, and European expansionâthe Western followers of Rome imagined the future conversion of Jews, Muslims, pagans, and Eastern Christians into one fold of Godâs people, assembled under the authority of the Roman Church. Starting with the eleventh-century papal reform, Whalen shows how theological readings of history, prophecies, and apocalyptic scenarios enabled medieval churchmen to project the authority of Rome over the world. Looking to Byzantium, the Islamic world, and beyond, Western Christians claimed their special place in the divine plan for salvation, whether they were battling for Jerusalem or preaching to unbelievers. For those who knew how to read the signs, history pointed toward the triumph and spread of Roman Christianity. Yet this dream of Christendom raised troublesome questions about the problem of sin within the body of the faithful. By the late thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, radical apocalyptic thinkers numbered among the papacyâs most outspoken critics, who associated present-day ecclesiastical institutions with the evil of Antichristâa subversive reading of the future. For such critics, the conversion of the world would happen only after the purgation of the Roman Church and a time of suffering for the true followers of God. This engaging and beautifully written book offers an important window onto Western religious views in the past that continue to haunt modern times. |

In concluding Gift and Mystery, the pope writes to his brother priests, 'Learn to see in your priesthood the Gospel treasure for which it is worth giving up everything.' |
| | More details | From the bestselling author of Witness to Hope comes an inside account of the election of Pope Benedict XVI and an unflinching view of the Catholic Church at the dawn of a new era. After 25 years of John Paul IIâ²s guidance, the Catholic Church is entering a new age, with its bedrock traditions intact but pressing questions of its vitality to address in a rapidly changing world. Beginning with a portrait of John Paulâ²s last months, Godâ²s Choice will then offer an account of the complex conclave process that produced Benedict XVI as the next pope. Drawing on Weigelâ²s unprecedented access during the post-John Paul II intrerregnum, readers will be offered an inside view of the issues and personalities that shaped the conclaveâ²s deliberations. Weigel will also survey the current state of the Church around the world: the remarkable vitality of Catholicism in Africa; the new center of the worldâ²s Catholic population -- Latin America; the collapse of Catholic faith and practice in much of western Europe, contrasted with its strength in Poland and other parts of the post-communist world; the continuing struggles of Catholicism in Asia; the vibrancy of some aspects of Catholic life in the United States, even as the Church in America struggles to overcome its recent experience of scandal. Godâ²s Choice will paint a personal portrait of the new pope and analyze the crucial issues facing world Catholicism in the first decades of the 21st century. It will be a major reference point for anyone seeking to understand the Catholic future, and the larger human future the Church will help to shape. |

Heirs of the Fisherman: Behind the Scenes of Papal Death and Succession
by: John-Peter Pham
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA Published: 2006-04-27 ASIN: 0195305612

|
| | More details | The death of Pope John Paul II and consequent election of Pope Benedict XVI has shed light on a political process that the world has not been privy to for almost twenty-six years. People from around the world gathered in St. Peter's Square, wondering who the next Vatican leader would be and how the election process really worked, while everyone from international news correspondents to local priests added their own opinions to the debate. In Heirs of the Fisherman, former Vatican insider John-Peter Pham presents a candid portrait of the modern Vatican, the only account to reveal the striking changes to papal succession procedures made by John Paul II. Blending political and ecclesiastical history, Pham goes beyond a mere description of the complex rituals to offer rare insight into the dramatic shifts inside the College of Cardinals, whose 100 members now hail from 50 nations around the globe. He takes us into the secret conclave, where the electors were kept under lock and key, until they had selected a new pope. He also includes a chapter devoted to the intrigues of the 20th century where the first conclave had an emperor's veto and the last was won by the first non-Italian in four centuries becauase the Italians were bitterly divided. With a new Preface, Afterword, and appendices that include an English translation of the last will and testament of Pope John Paul II, Heirs of the Fisherman is an illuminating history and must-have guide to this vitally important world event. It will continue to be an indispensable reference to observers of future Catholic Church politics. |

Hitler's Pope: The Secret History of Pius XII
by: John Cornwell
Publisher: Viking Adult Published: 1999-10-01 ASIN: 0670886939
Read reviews >> |
|
| | More details | The explosive untold story of the most dangerous churchman in modern history--drawn from secret archives by an award-winning Roman Catholic journalist
Eugenio Pacelli, Pius XII--a man with unprecedented power for good and evil--was pope from 1939 to 1958. Today, still shadowed by his failure to condemn Hitler's Final Solution, he is at the same time nearing canonization. Backed by new research and exclusive access to a wealth of Vatican and Jesuit archives, John Cornwell tells for the first time, in depth, the truth about Pacelli's long career as a Vatican diplomat and the accord between Pacelli and Hitler that helped sweep the Nazis to unhindered power.
Hitler's Pope shows how Pacelli's entire life and career led to this, from a brilliant young Vatican lawyer drafting new papal power for the twentieth century to his 1933 Concordat with Hitler that muzzled protest by Germany's Catholic community, the most powerful in the world. Cornwell's explosive conclusion is that without Pacelli's contribution, Hitler might never have come to power or been able to press forward with the Holocaust.
As searing and provocative as David Wyman's The Abandonment of the Jews or Daniel Goldhagen's Hitler's Willing Executioners, Hitler's Pope conclusively documents Pius XII's anti-Semitism, narcissism, and calamitous mix of political and spiritual ambition--and it shows how many of Pacelli's policies are reasserting themselves today under the reign of John Paul II. It will surely spark a worldwide furor of controversy, both inside and outside the Catholic Church.
"Eugenio Pacelli was not a monster; his case is far more complex, more tragic than that. The interest of his story depends on a fatal combination of high spiritual aspirations in conflict with soaring ambitions for unprecedented power and control."--from the Preface
"Pius XII and the Jews . . . the whole thing is too sad and serious for bitterness."--Thomas Merton |
